Range Rover Head gasket
« on: May 23, 2006, 19:35:02 »
Hi everyone,

One of the head gaskets( LH from drivers position) on my 1993 3.9l Range
Rover has gone, can anyone tell me how much work is to change it and is
there any thing in particular I should be aware of.

I have worked on other 3.5l V8's but have never worked on a Range Rover.

Thanks

It’s not to difficult if your confidant with the spanners and have Torque wrench
Apart from pulling everything off, inlet manifold Plenum chamber etc.
The only areas that could cause a problem are the manifolds, bolts snap. And torqueing the head back down, the bolts at the back next to the fire wall are very hard to get at, lucky it’s the driver’s side the power steering pump bracket is fiddly and needs dislocated fingers.
Make sure the water hoses are nice and tight when putting the Plenum chamber back on as it’s an area that is prone to leak.
Unless you know you have composite gaskets fitted only fit the original tin one’s they are different thicknesses. Torque it down as in the book and make sure you have the plug leads put back in the right place.
Not starting the first turn of the key is a little off putting after having built up the nerve to do the job yourself
Make sure you have all the bits necessary to do the job and a good hot cup of tea.
Good luck

I agree with Mark - it isn't a terrible job. The trickiest bit I found was getting the inlet manifold back on as it's quite heavy and a long reach or it was for me.

I also managed to shear two rocker arm studs, the ones that go into the cylinder head, but thankfully they both drfited out.

Take it steady and I can't see you having too much trouble. Oh, the valley gasket has a right way and a wrong way round.

I used compsoite gaskets as they are easier to fit but you do lose some compression.

Most people would suggest you have the head checked for flatness or have it skimmed.

i would change both gaskets. if ones gone it would be a total p**s off to strip the whole thing down a couple of months later.

also it would pay you to have the heads checked, and re-lap the valves again and change the valve stem seals.
