Which Brand Name would YOU want? - Suspension
« on: May 24, 2006, 22:20:00 »
So let us imagine it is YOUR Birthday and your best friend has tricked out a Land Rover for YOU.

Which Brand/Make of kit would you hope he had fitted :?:

(I am sure some Brands/Makes are better at specific things, but I am talking generally speaking)

King, Fox, Dynamic, Ohlins, Reiger, Proflex or any number of other top shocker manufacturers if someone else was paying.  Otherwise I'm extremely happy with the performance and durability of Procomp and I haven't even tried their adjustable MX6 range yet, mmm!

I have seen and heard of procomps and decarbon breaking - so for quality its OME for me - and I would also say bilsteins if they did (??) a longer shock suitable for a 2"+ lift.

But to answer the question I'd say Procomp are pretty good and seem reasonable value for money.

Got to agree with Mrs Badger though EQUIPE EXTREME Kit  ........... very tasty   8)

Explorer have an excellent no-quibble guarantee on their Procomp products and I have used them exceedingly hard with no problems.

This is how I treat mine!

On the contrary I would rate a number of those manufacturers alongside Ohlins.  'Ohlins' are excellent, but not necessarily the shock of choice for WRC or Dakar competitors these days.  'Reiger' are fearsomely expensive but incredibly proficient and are the choice of many in both WRC and off road competitions.

Perhaps unsurprisingly, the US have got a lot to teach the europeans about damper design especially in the off road world - look at their big Pro-Trucks and their bypass shocks.  Here currently 'King' are in vogue and the Nissan Dakar team also used these.

In the UK I would thoroughly recommend Trevor Milner for advice on top quality shocks.  His own manufacture 'Vari-damps' are particularly impressive, but he and his team have a wealth of knowledge (and stock)in setting up Fox shocks too.

If I can scrape together the money - I might have a go with some MX6-R's or some Milner shocks.  But in the meantime my ES9000's do a superb job soaking up the abuse I throw at them!

I too had a set of bilsteins and they were great and i had a 2 " lift , but the travel of the shock wasnt long enough which means that I wasnt getting the axle travel - also it could damage the shock

Henry, get some older style mx6's 75 quid each for a superb shock...not as much as you though eh...damn sight cheaper than Milners stuff..he is just down the road form me. Yes there are loads of good manufacturers out there i was coming more from an ultimate kind of moto Gp suspension kind of thing. I have ohlins on my drz and 16 inch front travel and impeccable performance is what you get for your 1500 quid- for the front end they aint cheap.

As Bulli says go direct to Explorer Uk - very helpful.

I am of the no boots persausion myself, I worry that mud and grit will get caught inside the boots, but then my car is either racing or up on stands in the garage so it doesn't have to put up with thousands of miles of road dirt.

Pro comp on Blue, for off-road.  Pro comp on RRR for laning and towing.  OME on the LSE as it's standard, OEM on the TDi for the same reason.

OEM are not s**t dampers if you notice a big difference with 'uprated' then it was time to replace them anyway.
