having a nightmare today well it started last night, driving along started to get a shooooooo noise from behind the glover box area thought nothing more of it only got it when you excelerate so that was that, next day ie today noise getting worse thought nothing of it but noticed you dont feel the turbo kick in and you only get the noise when your in the turbo zone ie 2000 revs ,and now getting a lot of smoke out the exhaust and smelling of oil , ive had this problem ever since i have owned the car but never this bad so the question is do you think the turbo as gone and is there any way of finding out if it is ,i am willing to take the turbo off but really do need help here any suggestion would be great and i have checked the hoses to see if any splits in and there is none helppppp

SHOOOOOOOOOOO!
Hi ya mate sounds like a problem i had similar to what i had the other week-2000 revs shooo noise and lack of power with smell. This may sound daft but i lifted the bonnet and put on the revs and looked, found both the top and bottom intercooler hoses were sucking in.Replaced both hoses
(local independant charge me £18.50 for both) and guess what-problem solved.Hope this helps Andy.

I have got an old Disco series 1, done 170 000 miles 200 TDi.  On acceleration I get a puff of black smoke the more aggressive the acceleration the worse the smoke is.  I bought the Disco about 10 weeks ago and it uses a little oil but not enough to have had to top it up yet.  I have been advised that generally the turbo is good for about 60-80 000, could this be the culprit.  I am not getting a loss of power.

Def sounds like a split interooler hose... or one that has delaminated....
Sure you haven't missed a small split??

Other causes....

A leaking inlet manifold??
The air intake pipe has come off?
A Leaking exhaust manifold (or outlet from the turbo)??
A blown/leaking head gasket? - 200Tdi's do sometimes go at the back of the head - no oil/water contamination though - just a leak.

No, turbo's 'should' last at least 150,000 miles... (in theory)

What distroys a turbo the most is not letting it warm up, or cool down

i.e thrashing it straight from cold...

Or turning the engine straight off after a run, where you've been making the engine work - you should really let the engine idle for a short while (or just slightly above idle) before you stop the engine - to allow it to cool down.

But worst of all is the people who rev the engine before they turn it off!!!
When you rev the engine the turbo will speed up - then when you turn the ignition off, suddenly it's still spinning, but with no oil flow!!!

The other factor is servicing.... a turbo likes regular oil changes!!

Very unlikely to be the pump....

Which settings did you adjust??
Just the diaphragm, star wheel and the smoke screw??  Or the main fuel screw too??

That's the turbo killer.

The shaft runs on hydrodynamic bearings i.e. it floats on a cushion of oil when it is spinning. Turn of the engine from high revs and the oil supply cuts leaving the shaft to spin without lubrication . . . . . not good.

Makes me cringe when I hear people blipping TDi's before cutting the ignition . . . . . and usually its those blokes in country suits, in very shiny motors, that have done nothing more than pull a horse around all their life.

Sure you haven't missed a small split?

Just checked under the bonnet, when I rev the engine I am getting a puff of smoke from the top hose (at the turbo end), I replaced the jubilee clip and the problem still there.  Can't see any sign of damage to alloy molding for pipe but as a molding it is not smooth.

Am thinking of using some tape inside the hose to try to seal the connection, but at worst it is only a small gap.

Will this cause a puff of black smoke from the exhaust on acceleration?

Oh and excuse my ignorance, what do you mean by delaminated?  I have taken the hose off and given it a wash, there was a lot of oil gunk on it, to see if I can see any splits (I can't).

Delamination, is where the insides of the hose start to peel off. :)

The inside seems good, just need to clear the leak from the turbo end of the pipe then!

Just replaced the hose, still plumes of smoke coming from somewhere.  A closer inspection showed it coming from the exhaust manifold, so this needs to come off and probably a new gasket fitted.
