Running with Prop off and UJ's

I replaced one of my UJ's the other day and it did not seem quite right, the movement did not seem as free as the other end and when I re-fitted I continuted to get vibrations when accelerating.

I took it off and re-placed it and still does not seem as free moving as it should be. The part number is RTC3458, is this the correct part ? Does anyone know what the UJ size is in mm ?

The car is a 90/ 1989 / 2.5 NA.

As a test I would like to take the car for a spin and see if the vibration continues. I want to see if I can isolated this down to the UJ's, prop etc. Is this wize ?

A new U/J will always be slightly "stiffer" than a used one so it shouldn't be a problem.
Grease the centre spline & the other U/J and make sure it's packed, it could be that end that's causing the problems!!
You are fine to run without the propshaft, youjust need to mark the flanges on the prop, diff & transfer box before hand so you can put them all back in the same place. You'll need to have the centre diff-lock in, of course, other wise it won't go anywhere!

if you were to take a prop off and not mark the flanges would this cause problems on reasembley if the prop went back in a different place

I marked the flange that connects to the Transfer box, but not the front one to the diff. Hope this will not cause a problem.

Anyhow having driven without the Prop on I still get the vibrations so time to get under the car and give the rear prop a thorough looking over and to replace that wheel bearing.

Marking the flanges may not make any difference but is always advisable, just to get the same orientation of all the flanges and balance of the propshaft.

Are you getting the vibration through the steering or the chassis?
If you've got a wheel bearing gone or loose then that's a good starting point.

Doh! Well I let the hand brake off this time and moved the prop about, there is clear give in one of the UJ's so I will replace both as I have to take the prop off anyhow.

I am also going to try and adjust the bearing using the adjusting nut.
