it won't start :-(
« on: June 01, 2006, 12:39:28 »
just tried to start my defender (2.5td) and the starter motor catches occasionally and then just whirrs , it's been doing it for a few days but I can usually get it to start after 3 or 4 attempts, this morning it's whirring more than before though it still catches every now and again, just not enough to start her up.

Any ideas, I'm guessing starter is fubbared or something is sticking maybe?

had this on the 110. Then one day it stuck on and whirred away happly until smoke started to come out. So I hit it with my magic lump of wood and it has worked faultlessly ever since  8)

Probably not a helpful post mind you

Could be as simple as the battery low on charge.

do you think so? It gets used a fair bit and it had a new battery and alternator about 8 months ago.

I've just taken it off and stripped it down and everything looks fine, no missing teeth or sticky bits. I recon it may be the solenoid as I can't hear a click or anything when I turn the key and that would account for the  cog not engaging with the flywheel?

Definately worth giving the battery charge a go though before I go out and buy a new one!

From what you say it sounds like the battery should be OK, but if you nip back to the shop you got it from they can probably test it and the alternator for you.

If there's no click from the solenoid it could be low battery, bad earth or faulty solenoid.  Bridge the two big terminals with a screwdriver and see if the starter engages, careful though it sparks a lot, if it spins OK then it's probably the solenoid.  Other thing to try is a seperate earth back to the battery, you could use a jump lead as a temporary connection.

hth and good luck

I tested the battery and it was reading 12.5v, stuck the charger on it and topped it up but still no go  :(

cleaned all the connections and put a new earth connector on the solenoid as that was a bit loose, but still the same  :(

I've just ordered a new starter so hopefully that'll sort it out!

Cheers for all your help

Dont go throwing the old one away, you should have an electrical automotive engineer shop somewhere nearby who could more than likely re-furbish it for you
