td5 owners please look under your bonnets

hi folks

small favour required, after the recent purchase of my td5 i noticed a hole in the n/s vertical panel of the bulk head below the heater box!

eventually got to the local dealers to obtain a replacement grommit?

to be told all defenders have this hole left open?

 its approx 40mm diameter.

 is this so and why

im aware all vehicles usually have some sort of air vent to improve
circulation but these are normally covered with a grill and rubber flap to stop water ingress

 cheers kevin

ps do you think its the safe wading depth indicator(when the wifes feet get wet youve gone too far.
the shinny blue defender with the winch, checker plate body protection, extra seating and windows
and at this point I noticed the n/s air vent wasnt fully closed so lets not forget the mud stained interior and the water logged kenwood 6disc cd

AFAIK it's where the air con pipe work fits.... though I may be wrong.

Edited to say.. is definitely where the Air Con pipe work fits as have a picture from the 110 I 'borrowed'. I'd imagine the non-air con models should have a bung/grommet.

As Porny says it's the air con pipe feed. All non ac Defenders have this left open - I find gaffer tape seals it well enough.

It's a shame the hole isn't 35mm rather than 40mm...

As Land Rover part number DCP7299L which is a solid  (i.e. no hole) rubber grommet would probably fit and it's only 95p or there abouts.... though you could get a cheaper grommet from elsewhere.

mine came with a big grommet in it...

I would go back to your dealer and ask to have a look under the bonnets of their TD5s that dont have air con...

I've got wires going through there so I'll think I'll stick to the gaffer tape

Had a quick look but there's far too much mud in the engine bay to know if there's a hole there.
