Discovery rear hub?
« on: June 12, 2006, 12:53:26 »
OK another first for me at the moment, I have the rear hub off as there is an oil leak from what looks like the rear seal.  Firstly I was surprised by how loose the two hub nuts were (finger tight).  Not sure if this is right?

I removed the hub (with disk attached), and noticed there are two seals one inside and one outside (I went to the Landrover garage here in Germany who told me there was only one oil seal in the hub), and the two bearings inside the hub seem to move about quite a bit.

There was no play in the wheel when jacked up!

I know I should replace the bearings as a matter of course in these circumstances but am not willing to pay Land Rover prices for a part I can get elsewhere at a fraction of the price!

Should there be this much play in the bearings?

I wish this project would just hurry up and finish!

But I don't think it will if I keep making simple mistakes

The bearings will flap around when the hub is off the vehicle, they are taper roller bearings so only nip up when you tighten the hub nuts.  If there was no play in the wheels when you jacked it up, I wouldn't worry about it.  Just make sure that you repack them with grease if necessary.

Depends, probably.  I use Castrol LM.
