buying music online
« on: June 13, 2006, 21:38:26 »
recent reports of illegal piracy of music and films has made me more wary of any site that you can get music from

sites that i use which i would deem kosher are sites like amazon and play.com etc.

however some mates of mine have told me about a site called
allofmp3.com

which is a russian site

it seems genuine enough and unlike piracy sites you pay for music (for example the new pink album is about 1.60 dollars (american i think)

you can buy individual tracks or the whole album.

however ive read online that it aint exaclty above board and i dont want to find out down the line that my credit card purchases for albums from here will get the boys in blue knocking on my door.

the prices are v tempting and unlike itunes the bitrate is cd quality not 128kpbs which is pants.

what do you guys think.. am i being too paranoid or is the site not worth using for legal reasons..

and if so can you suggest alternative legal sites i can buy music online and the bitrate is top notch?

cheers

d

Digital Millenium Copyright Act.

After a brief Google search it appears to me that this act applies to the USA. It would be worth checking whether it also legalises this method of obtaining music in this country.

which sort of comes back to my original question

copyright doesnt apply in russia hence why this site is there

but we are here where the law is different.

...

anyone know more bout this?

DMCA is a USA thing BUT we have our own version.

Some facts

In the UK up untill last week it was NOT legal to copy/rip music that you have purchased, this is myth but the record companies have realised its futile and backed down on it.

AllofMP3.com is subect to legal action. Although the site may be legal in russia (which is doubtful) the site IS illegal for almost all countries outside the UK.

P2P (Emule/Edonkey/Kazaa/WinMX/Gnutella) obtained MP3s are only legal if the artist has released the recording to the public domain.

Take a look round the Internet for the law regarding copyright etc.

Rich
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

It's questionable whether it's legal over here.  The recording industry say it rather blatently isn't, and since allofmp3 do not have distribution rights for the copyrighted material (certainly in this country) they do kind of have a point.

Contrary to popular belief you don't actually have a right to copy tracks or make a backup of your CDs, however as rich has said the UK recording industry have recently announced that they will not persue anyone for doing this.

The reason it's all a bit of a grey area is because there are a *lot* of laws covering it, there is not only copyright law (which is complicated enough, and given that the copyright is usually held by the musicians it's not even consistant from track to track) but there are restrictions on transfer of media and arguably a dozen other laws.

Luckily prosecuting individuals is prohibitively expensive, however, I wouldn't count on that for legal immunity.

At the end of the day, buy the CD, it's easier :)

i dont mind buying music, im not a fan of illegally downloading it since you dont know what you are downloading and if its a genuine mp3 you still dont know if its the song you wanted and the bitrate is questionable.

i just find that buying the digital version as opposed to the physical cd saves space in my office and i know if i am careful the mp3 will last longer than a scratched cd

just my 2p worth
