Child car seat legislation!!
« on: June 14, 2006, 18:51:57 »
OMG when will it end ? i just saw on the news that as of sept kids upto about the age of thirteen have to be in a child seat.subject to a £30 on the spot for failiure to comply.
so lets look ,they want more eco friendly cars ...and not so many biguns on the road, increased road tax (for gridlocked motorways and constant maintenance on trunk roads) then they go and restrict the amount of people you can carry,
i dont know how many disco owners thought "great seven seats plenty of room for the kids".
I did, one of the important factors, you know its that or a sharan kind of situation .
Now i am just getting very frustrated..
so what next?
l have privacy glass so i may get away with it, but those people with 5, 6 and up kids and no privacy glass (probably got thermal cameras anyway) may suffer.
post your thoughts ,move the post if its in the wrong place , whatever
cheers !
Dave.

I agree its a crap bit of legislation.

You cant fit 3 child seats/boosters across the back seat of any car, even my "old" passat with it cavernous back seat couldnt fit em comfortably. Its also a problem as a booster in the side facig seat of the back of my 90 would be er, lethal...they arent idea as it is, but add one of them and you are asking for trouble!

It'll be interesting to see what, say, childminders do, how are they going to manage if they cant carry as many kids??

I feel I could do with a car seat some days, just to be that little bit higher!!!!!!!!

When Conner was 6/7 he refused to sit in a car seat.  Can't see him sitting in one ever again, and he is only 9!

Must be some car seat manufacturer who is an MP trying to make a bit more profit, I think.

I heard about this a couple of weeks ago and thought it was
more to do with the height, not the age of the child, although age
of 11 was mentioned?? and height of 140cm as far as i can remember.

Still, very confusing  :?  :?

Can just see the old bill out and about

Hi,

the height restriction is 130 cm,  however the twin 9 year old monsters are 132cm - so i can relax otherwise i would have to buy the girls high heeled shoes!

Your all missin the point . . . ..

What the hell happens when you ring and ask your "friend,  sister,  mother,  etc etc   to pick up your youngun from nurcery or school in an emergancy cos you cant get home for a couple of hours.  All because your stuck in a bl---y grid lock due to all the extra cars needed on the roads to pick the kids up that are normally picked up on the school runs,(nobodies got a child seat unless they all buy one just in case)  worked out by all the mums together like a little army,  and altered at a drop of a hat to accomadate these little emergancies  etc etc etc etc. . . .

If you have 1 child then your not going to buy another two car seats just in case your friend wants her 2 picking up every now an then,  or want to fit all the ancor points . . . . . .

an it dont even effect me ! ! ! but its all GOING MAD ! ! !

there thats me done . . . . cheers . . . .oh an sorry about the spelling

As far As I know it is a height restriction rather than an age restriction. The age is just a guide line.

To be honest it is about time something was done. I'm sick to death of seeing toddlers unrestrained in the back of cars or sitting in the front seat with a seat belt that doesn't fit.

I have only ever had 2 car seats for my lad, the first was one of those reclining type rocker car seats from newborn, then we bought him a seat which will fit him untill he is old enough to sit safely in a car with just a normal seat belt. This seat starts of as a normal seat with straps, next stage is seat with car seat belt, last stage, back of the seat comes off so you just have a booster seat.

Older children WON'T have to sit in a full child seat, but WILL have to have a booster seat. The reasen for this is seatbelts are only designed for passengers over a certain height.

If I had to go out and buy a new car seat for my little one every year I would do so as long as he was safe in the car.

What price do you put on your childs life?

I have to agree with fram, all the points are there, it is to do with the height of the child, normal seat belts can be fatal to children who are not tall enough, use a booster seat.

As lots have mentioned already it is aimed at those totally irresponsible people who cart their kids around on there knee's or just standing in the back of the car.

I have seen kids hanging upside down in RTA's correctly strapped into their car seats, they save lives.

You read about those who don't use them or where seat belts, its not nice cutting children out of cars.

The new rules have a purpose, trying to save lives.
I'll shut up now.

So are they gonna legislate and make my 'vertically challenged' father in law sit in a kiddie seat?

There are so many idiots who don't belt their children in now - the police can't or won't enforce the current legislation - why does anyone think another law will make them buy and  use a booster seat as well?

On the subject of safety, drivers air bags can be fatal to shorter drivers who have to sit nearer the wheel (in my experience Fords are particularly bad in this respect) but they don't give you an option to disarm them.

Copied from the above site.^^^^^
.....................................................................................
Cars
The law requires children travelling in cars to use an appropriate child restraint or adult seat belt, if they are available. Children cannot be carried in the front seat unless they are either in a child restraint or are using the seat belt. It is the driver's responsibility to ensure that children under the age of 14 years are either using an appropriate child restraint or an adult seat belt if available.

Cars - Children under 3 years old
If carried in the front seat, an appropriate child restraint MUST be used (the adult seat belt is not sufficient). Children under 3 years old may not travel in the front unless they are in a child restraint.

If carried in the rear seat, an appropriate child restraint MUST be used, IF AVAILABLE.

If an appropriate restraint is fitted in the front of the car, but not the rear, children under 3 years old MUST sit in the front and use that restraint. Remember, you could move the restraint from the front to the rear if you wish. Rearward-facing seats are designed to be used in the rear as well as the front. You should always put a rearward-facing baby seat in the rear if is a front passenger airbag fitted.

Cars - Children Aged 3 to 11 years and under 1.5 metres tall
If carried in the front seat, an appropriate child restraint MUST be worn IF AVAILABLE.
If not, an adult seat belt MUST be worn.

If carried in the rear seat, an appropriate child restraint MUST be worn IF AVAILABLE.
If not, an adult seat belt MUST be worn IF AVAILABLE.

If an appropriate restraint or seat belt is fitted in the front of the car, but not in the rear, children between 3 to 11 years old and under 1.5 metres tall MUST use that restraint or seat belt. (Remember, you could move the restraint from the front to the rear if you wish).

Cars - Children Aged 12 or 13 years or younger children 1.5 metres or more in height
If carried in the front or rear seat, an adult seat belt MUST be worn IF AVAILABLE.
