I wanna tell you a story
« on: June 21, 2006, 17:32:10 »
Why is it that people continually try to push through a gap, on the road, when it is not their right of way?

Today I was pondering this when I was driving along and had the right of way.  There were 2 vehicles parked on the opposite side of the road to me, and space for one car to pull into to let me through.  I wait and wait and wait as everyone keeps on pushing through, then I go, as I am well entitled to and the car coming towards me, pulls into the gap.  No problem there, so we thought, until the car behind the one facing me, continued to come forwards, while the driver was looking to his right, then he turned to face the direction in which he was travelling.  Screetch of brakes and one almighty bang as he drove into the back of the first car!!!!!!!!

Now, both the other drivers were men, and luckily I am no shrinking violet, as quite a few of you know!!!!!!  Initially the first car, tried to blame me, until I pointed out it was my right of way, and he was not in the wrong either, as he had pulled in, as he should! He then agreed with me - well he had no choice - I was right. The driver behind him could only say "I couldn't see!".  My reply was, while trying not to laugh, well if you looked in the direction in which you were travelling, you would have seen, because I was watching you!

My car is fine.  Car no. 1 has a bent back bumper.  Car no. 2 has smashed lights and a very bent front bumper too!

Moral of the story - don't push through gaps that are not yours to go through, and, WATCH WHERE YOU ARE GOING.

Gets me annoyed when people don't give way when it's your right of way. I don't mind sitting and waiting if there are a few cars on their way through, but when that car comes racing up behind them just as you start to pull off, well......Funny how quickly people can change their mind when they see a Land Rover coming towards them, especially one with a few off-road mods!!!
The other thing that really gets me is those ignorant drivers who don't thank you when you give way to them. I always give a wave, weahter it's my right of way or not, even if I'm not the first car to go through. I always treat it the same way as someone holding a door open for me.

Not always true Mark. We went to Sheffield today to pick up some things and we went in Johnty's disco. Now not many of you will have seen it but it is certainly very battle scarred from doing the extreme course at Langdale. The number of people who look at this vehicle and think "Oh its big it must be going slow, I will just nip out in front of it!" is quite frankly unbelievable. We had to anchor up more than a few times both going and coming back.........trouble was coming back we were carrying two 20 litre drums of paint in the back!!! Luckily we didnt spill any of the paint but if we had I would not have been as calm I have to say :x

Well on my way home today, B road so not very wide, two trucks have a squeeze to get past each other, there was i, driving along and coming towards me was a scoffolding truck and a cyclist i carry on going thinking that he wouldn't try to over take with me coming, WRONG!!!

The jerk swung right over onto the other side of the road, me screeches to a stand still and he just carries on driving as tho nothing had happened!! MORON!!

Agree with this to,

so many impolite people around today, just after i passed my test i even got into the habit of waving a "your welcome" assuming that people i let through gaps would thank me for it, soon got out of that habit
i wish, i wish, i wish i had a landy,

Here's another instance of people not looking.

A couple of years ago I hired a twin-axle box trailer to move some furniture from the mother-in-laws to her sisters over at Todmorden

Job went well, nice easy, a very stable tow.

On the return journey I decided to divert down some of the side-streets in Hebden Bridge in order to photograph the packhorse bridge over Hebden Water that gives the town its name.
As I manoeuvred donw one narrow street, with aprked cars on the nearside & trailer tyres rubbing the kerb at the other

Some complte numpty in a B*W (as usual  ) threw the door open as the rear of the Discovery passed him.........

He shut it equally quickly as he saw an orange box bearing down on him

Thankfully I'd seen him sat there & was ready for him to do something stupid (apart from drive a B*W of course)

People don't use their eyes anymore

Oh, but as a driving instructor I have to correct some of you, there is no 'right of way' there is 'priority' and priority can only be given, never taken.  Rules of etequet dictate that you give priority to a car coming uphill, or if the obstruction is on your side of the road but unless a road sign dictates give priority to oncoming vehicles you should not expect oncoming cars to sto for you, in the event of an accident you cannot argue "but you should have stopped", it goes knock for knock ie both parties at fault.  It is slightly easyier to prove blame if the centre of the road is marked and only one party crosses it, but if the obstruction is stationary then the centre line becomes useless anyway.

As for the courtesy to aknowledge when you let someone through, or lack of the same, is part of the reason people don't stop for oncoming vehicles any more.
