Back from Africa
« on: June 22, 2006, 13:23:04 »
Hi all, I'm back!

We didn't quite make it to Ghana because of the 50 degree heat around Mali, so we drove to Guinea instead and then came back again.  About 14,000 km in total.

The truck had one or two mechanical mishaps, but then again, it's a Land Rover, so what do you expect?  We kept it rolling throughout however, thanks to a good selection of spares.

If anybody is interested you can read all about it on our blog:

Cheers,
David

By the way, I've put a video of the 101 climbing over a little dune in Western Sahara on Google Video.  The fact it took 5 goes was entirely down to the driver!

In Western Sahara, I lost 6wd;  the rear axle's driven by a separate transfer box which has the centre diff welded up, and it's got un-welded-up, right at a very inopportune moment during a dangerous hill climb.

Then in Morocco I lost low ratio in the main transfer box - I think the gears are fine but the selector shaft is stuck, but it's a [!Expletive Deleted!] to get to the access plate so I thought I'd let Paul do it!

Apart from that, various bits of wear and tear need sorting, nothing surprising really after the pummelling it's taken.
