Input shaft oil seal

I have just tackled the removal of the old oil seal for the front diff input shaft.  I had ordered a replacement from Paddocks.  It came looking pretty much like any oil seal I've seen.

On seeing the old one in situ, there looked like a metal washer or spacer which I tried to remove carefully.

Lost my rag a bit and took the screwdriver and hammer too it and finally got it out, only to find the whole thing was a metal framed oil seal (I think) and nothing like what I thought was the replacement.

IS THE REPLACEMENT A DIFFERENT PART OR HAVE I SCREWED UP?

There are different ones and it wouldn't be the first time someone got the wrong one.

Firstly which axles have you got and are the diffs original?

As far as I know the axles and diffs are all original.  I ordered the seal for a 200 Tdi Disco and the part came through.  I compared the sizes and they seem exactly the same so I fitted the new one OK.  Guess I will have to wait and see if it holds OK.

The old seal was a wierd metal cased thing (never seen one like that), but never mind.

Possibly not the first replacement it's had then.  The one you fitted will be steel under the outer ring of red or black rubber, that's how it stays put.  If you've fitted it now then see how it goes, at least you know it will all come apart again if need be :?
