county 110

My mate has a county 110 2.5ltr petrol.

When he jacks any wheel up off the ground he cant turn the wheel.

He isnt in diff lock as when one wheel is jacked up and puts it in 1st with the egine on  the wheel spins, puts diff lock in and the dash board light comes on and the car tries to move.

Hand brake isnt on.

any ideas why the wheel wont move?

not brakes as they arent binding and he has checked them all and not all 4 brakes would bind on that hard all at the same time surely?

All 4 bearings gone??? Not likely really.

sorry, misread it... didnt see that it was any wheel. no idea then sorry!

edit  - unless hes got diff problems on both axles - try it with everything in neutral

If it does this then he must be able to move wheel when jacked up. As this is demonstrating the wheel moving and that this diff is working ok.

Has he tried this on both axles?

Yup he has tried it on both axles.

He knows loads about landies as he has an original RR classic 6x6 and rebuilt engines loads of times etc etc but on this occasion he is totaly stumped.

OK if that's the case then something is causing it to bind up and make it difficult to turn by hand.

You say it's unlikely but it must be the reason as everything is working as it should when driven by the engine.

He can start to elimate things by removing propshafts and halfshafts. Try front axle first. Remove front prop. Lift one wheel and see if it turns by hand.
If it doesn't remove the half shaft on that side and again see if it moves by hand. If it doesn't strip the hub and look at the CV, bearings etc. If it does move ok he'll need to look at the diff. While doing this he might as well do the same for the other front wheel too.

If it moved ok by hand after removing the front propshaft then something is binding it in transfer box. Assuming it was in neutral before  

Then do the same for the rear axle.

Yes afraid so, unless of course it starts moving by hand easily as soon as he removes the propshaft. If that's the case he can focus effort on transfer box and gearbox as something is not right when it's in neutral.

centre diff has probably <ahem> itself & the broken bits are probably locking it up,then when he drives it its overcomming the resistance o the bust bits

but the diff lock works though. When he jacks up any wheel and uses the engine to spin the wheel it is fine. puts diff lock in the car tried to move forward.  :?:
