I feel this is a subject where we can easily brand people into a stereotype! You will always have responsible people in each group, as well as the ones who give the group a bad name.

I quite often see dog owners let their dogs mess on the pavement, even though we have the dog bins around the town.

As a horse rider I choose not to ride on the road, as most drivers dont slow down even though I wear a yellow tabard and ride horses who are good in traffic. I ALWAYS thank people if i meet them on a byway and they let me pass.

And as for the diet thing, horses dont eat meat (unlike dogs) thats why it doesnt smell as bad  :D

Although I don't ride myself, I'm with you.
It's a bit hypocritical of people to slate horses for being on the roads (who've been there for hundreds of years before motor vehicles) & then complain about the banning of 4x4s from the lanes. IMHO Everyone has the right to use the roads / lanes, whatever their choice of vehicle, and no-one should be forced off them by other inconsiderate users!!!!!!!!!!!!!

going back to the insurance thing earlier in the post, what about insurance for push bikes. they pull out infront on you, you hit them although it is their fault and do serious damage to your car, but can you claim on their insurance? Chance would be a fine thing.
I'm of the opinion that anyone who uses the roads should have some kind of insurance.

I for one will admit to hating seeing horses on roads.
They are only vaguely in control at the best of times, and are prone to....erm.....veering about a bit.


My car would not be allowed to use the road if its steering veered about, and it didnt stop as and when the pedal was pressed. There also may be issues if it scampered about if a noisy motorbike or similar overtook it. Im also only allowed to produce a certain level of emissions.

A horse does all of the above and produces solid waste which I can tell you(as a biker) is deadly when you hit it............(and smelly)

I discriminate only on grounds of safety. My 4x4 isnt being banned on safety grounds from the countryside, its being banned cos apparently it tears up the lanes(you ever seen the damage horses feet do to a muddy lane!!!)

Yes Id like to see horses banned from the road.(sorry horsey guys and gals out there). But its from a safety aspect only. Id work for a company that has a body shop, and have seen the damage a horse can do(especially when it SITS on the car :lol:)

I like em tho, theyre lovely things galloping about etc, though I dont share the enthusiasm to ride them.

I still stick with what I said earlier; cars pay to use the roads, be it byways or motorways; they have to be insured, proven safe, taxed and the "operator" has to pass a test to prove they are capable of driving it safely which they can't even learn to do until they are 17.

A young kid can take any horse on a public road, even one weighing a lot more than many cars and which cannot be controlled and is plainly unsafe.

I am not anti horses but there are people who are irrisponsible with them and they do damage roads. Yes they have been around longer but why should that make them exempt from the road traffic act?

The horses in New York City have little bags under the back to catch the Pooh !

Compulsory !!! . . . . should have been sorted years ago.


As for the Horses, I have no problems with them these days, most of the riders I know take out voluntary insurance now so they do have some sense of responsibilty to other road users.



What really gets to me is the pig ignorant attitude of those hordes of bleedin' push bike riders. Never have I know such a miserable, bad tempered, think they can do whatever they want on the road, bunch of uninsured assholes in my life.


Four abreast, holding up the normal road traffic, cutting corners, jumping traffic lights, generally ignoring the majority of road traffic regulations and rules, even the highway code seems to mean nothing to the vast majority of them. Then they have the cheek to complain about motor vehicles.

Statistically they are the group of road users who are most likely to be involved ion an accident . . . . . . but are they insured . . . . most probably not !!!

I tell you, ramblers and push bikers . . . all came from the same mould. 99% of the ones I've met are totaly selfish assholes who want everything for themselves, their own way, whenever they want, at everyone elses expense. . . . nobs !!!!


Oh yeah . . . and my dog craps where he wants . . . . I can't really stop that . . . . . but I do have a bag for clearing up with when in public places

All car drivers should be made to ride a motorbike for a year before they can drive a car.

All new drivers should be restricted to 800 c.c. or less for the first 2 years.

Driving along with music blaring, windows down, leaning forward out of your seat (why???) and being a general [ed: naughty] should be banned or an escape clause for the insurance companies.

Oh yes, I nearly forgot, everyone should be made to ride a horse at least once a month.



Maybe then ... everyone would know and appreciate how everyone else feels

Ooh - just thought of another one ... community service should include going round the streets picking up discarded dog poo and chasing cats out of gardens (unless they can prove it's actually their garden) :lol:  :lol:

Agree with your comments regarding the motorcycle bit Gord - not so sure about the push bike thing though, I would hate to be tarred with my own brush  :lol:


There is a need for rules and in some cases bans, but it's the level of intolerance and downright irresponsibility shown by some groups that really gets my back up.


Dog mess on the streets though is deffo being anti-social in the highest order. Dog owners really do have a responsibility towards the cleanliness of our environment. If it were not for us wanting to keep dogs, or for that matter cats and horses, then it is very unlikly that these animals would share the same space as us in the first place.

Had a problem with an irresponsible dog owner letting her little rat leave a pile outside my front door every morning. Told her I'd go do the same for her and the problem stopped.

Fact is we just lost a local byway to lazy dog owners too idle to walk off a wide, shale track and use the local bridelways and footpaths. Sad innit?

there are rude people in every group...

im sure some people here are good cyclists (ie not jumping red lights etc) but my general view is that they are a pain unless they stick to cycle lanes.

i suspect some people have lovely cats here too... but when i moved into my last house the garden was full of cat mess as people dont train their cats to use litter trays anymore.

Its up to the individual. Just like how people accuse 4x4s of ripping up fields and tracks, whereas a lot of the people on this forum will follow the GLASS guidelines and go out in responsible groups and stick to the tracks they are allowed to.

As for my horse? She had better insurance than my car!

Missed one... everyone should go out with an artic driver ( NO.. not that kind of 'go out' ) for a day.. around London or Birmingham or the like... or even around the M25.. THEN you really understand... :twisted:

Parasites in dog poo can cause blindness in children. Anyone who does not clear up after their dog obviously does not care about this or is ignorant.

I think it's more correct to say that the parasites can cause blindness in children who are allowed to come into contact with dog poo.  Surely at least some of the the responsibility is with the parents here?

I've always taken the view that if it's somewhere people are walking all the time (like a public foot path, or the pavement around a residential area), I'll clean it up, but I'm not running off between the trees in the woods where foxes, deer, and all other kinds of fauna are doing their business too.

Anyway, what if you are a blind person ? How are they supposed to see the mess you allow your dog to leave.

And more to the point, how are they supposed to clean up after their guide dog?  :-)

For anyone who is wondering, I can provide the answer.  The dogs are trained to do their business on command, and are taken out doors for that purpose before going out "on duty".

I have two dogs. Around home we don't clean up after them. Only if they poo on the drive. :roll:  No pavements, parks ect. Just single track lanes and fields. But if we go in more public places we do. As to cyclists. I cycle, though not as much as I used to.  When we where out with a group, (not the head down, R's up variety) if a car approached from behind, a rider at the rear would shout and we would fall into single file. I also fall into some of the other classes mentioned.  Ex horse owner, motorcyclist, walker and I've even owned cats.  As we know, there are people in all groups who are either selfish or just plain ignorant. All we can do is try not to be like them. BTW. Now the cows are out in the fields, the dogs really enjoy cleaning the 90's mud flaps and under the car's mudguards. :D
