What's it and what's it worth ?
« on: July 04, 2006, 17:34:11 »
Had a brief look at a fascinating vehicle today ...

Looks like a Comp Safari or Trials 90 Defender soft top with roll cage, ally decking, sports seats, harnesses etc but its G reg (tax exempt), with a 3.9 litre Chevvy V8 and auto box.

Apparently its done 55 miles since being built (was insured for £15,000 as the cost of build) and virtually every part is brand new.

The whole thing is immaculate and obviously built to a very high standard but on 'standard' suspension - no trick high articulation bits etc.

The present owner has accepted it in lieu of payment for some building work and we are trying to establish a reasonable value / price.

I will get some detailed photos tomorrow evening.

Any ideas or advice please anyone ?

Well, many competition motors will have a passing resemblance to a 90, eg Tomcat, QT, DJM etc...
or it could be a home built design. Have a look for any identification plates. Could your friend ask the previous owner what it is?

Lack of trick suspension is to be expected as it wouldn't have any benefit for safaris.

If you have a look through the sites in my sig or the AWDC and the photo sites linked from them you might find something similar.

As to value, I have no idea but would guess at less than the build cost.

Should be wearing a 'Q' plate, so not worth overly much except to somebody who specifically wants a vehicle of that spec id guess

A quick look in TOR shows a V8 safari racer for £2750, unless its a real good beast like a Milner or a Bowler, its probably worth more as parts.

I doubt 3.9 is a chevvy block, more likely a rangie. Chevvy are still V6 at 4.3L
Hela - Disco 200TDi, Still stock for now but watch this space.......

I lurv the smell of mud in the mornin'

Thanks guys

Best description of it atm is probably similar to Bowler / Tomcat etc but in immaculate / brand new condition.

As to the engine - 3.9 litres was mentioned but in fairness I doubt the guy that has it now even knows for sure, It has a Shelby 309 badge on the dash but I aint seen under the bonnet yet. 309 cu inches would make it just over 5.0 litres and that would be fun

Further info will be forthcoming
