GKN toughned halfshafts
« on: July 04, 2006, 21:08:25 »
Anyone know a good source of GKN front halfshafts???

About to start building up a front axle for a Suzuki (can I say that here?) chassied, Nissan Engined, Land Rover Axled monster special and we would like GKN halfshafts for it.

Cheers

Paul/Anybody

Spoke to your man Gwyn and he has depressed us beyond belief.  He tells us that we have Range Rover axles, from an early 200 tdi Disco and if we put lockers and big tyres on it it will fall apart breaking CVs and Half shafts.

We are now depressed and confused as other people have told us there is only one type of CV and they all have the same part number, 10 spline and 24 spline halfshafts are all the same length and all Defender, Disco, Range Rover diffs are the same except for the splines.

Inclined to believe Gwyn's opinion as he clearly knows what he is talking about, on the other hand it means most of the work and money we have put in so far is going to have to be thrown away.

So, we want disks all round, we want tough/unbreakable axles and we want to be able to put it all under a Suzuki Jimny chassis.  Suggestions/ideas/information please folks.

There lots of CV types. and the shafts to go with them. Yes Gwyn know what hes talking about aswell.

You need the early 90/110 axel with the AEU2522 CVs. These are the strongest CV without going for the ones Ashcrofts sell. You could always find out if the CVs from a 130 will fit as these are a little stronger than standard. If not, move on to 24 spline axels from a 300tdi disco or a late 90/110.

Since you are building from scratch, get a set of Nissan or Toyota axles and shove under there..  by far the simplest option, and most likely the cheapest.

Gwyn is spot-on, there are plenty of CV variants and shaft length / spline combinations, and subsequently, stub axle lengths / hub widths.

If you stick with LR axles, then you'll need to be looking at GKN or Maxidrive shafts (nothing else is really up to the job IMHO) and an early front axle from a 90 or 110.

You can fit stronger parts to your current axles, and fit something like the Maxidrive conversion to allow the AEU2522 CVs to be fitted... or you can fit Ashcroft CVs (although there still might be some issues with these)

GKN also make CV's for landys that are stronger than AEU2522 but not as strong as ashcrofts CV's and are only £160 a pair

Yeah, i blew a cv up when i first got lockers and then i learnt that if you just put the motor in low first and just let it chug through and let the lockers sort it out... works a treat!
