Good evening, had a kinda problem for a little while now, the alternator belt slips/squeals, as this is happening the rev counter is at zero, it has an attempt or or two then "kicks in" and all is fine, this usually happens if the vehicle has been idling or the fans running for a while, never had it happen when out n about on a run, i have done the obvious like check the belt, which was ok but changed it any how incase it had become varnished on the edges, also roughed up the pulleys, they had no signs of contamination on them, BUT pretty much @ the end of play at slab common today the tacho was at zero for good , also this problem of belt squeel was not evident, checked battery voltage which was 11.98 @ idle unloaded, but checked of the back of the alternater n was 9.44 volts
then decided to drive home, seemed fine (about 25 miles ish) but in the daylight so no lights used, so the question is alternator and or earths??? had a quick wiggle of them today and seemed tight should i remove the battery lead and the one that goes to the near side top wing (are ther any more?) and try again or just cough up for a new alternator?? many thanks guys n girls P.S its a 1991 v8 inj disco manual g/box [/b]
