He didnt join pink floyd as he article said, he started Pink Floyd. But his abuse of drugs made him unreliable at turning up to gigs and he went crazier than he already was. As Eeyore stated Shine on you crazy diamond was a tribute song to Syd Barrett. I was a big fan of Syd Barrett , his lyrics are surreal strange. In his solo albums you can tell he is out of it alot. He had a thing about gnomes.
I did here back in the early nineties of his mad antics in cambridge libary, stuffing books in his coat and running out of the libary.

When I was in the sixth forum many winters ago, Bike was a popular song often requested and encord when I used to carry my guitar around.

Yeah, unfortunately he'd not really been "here" for about 30 years...  Poor guy.

When the Floyd released Echoes a couple of years back, with several Syd songs on it, I strongly suspected it was to give Syd's bank account a bit of a boost from the royalties.

The BBC were all over the place, saying alternately that he'd formed Pink Floyd and that he'd been invited to join it by Roger Waters.  At least the songs they played on the radio were from the right albums.

:) When Syd joined The Tea Set, he replaced a guy called Chris Dennis, I think it was about 1964.  After a while gigging under this name, Syd invented the name "The Pink Floyd Sound", eventually becoming Pink Floyd.  Nick Mason, Roger Waters and Rick Wright were in this original line up.  Syd spent approx three years with the band writing some of the best known early Floyd songs and if he hadn't done so much acid, who knows?  Or perhaps the drugs enhanced his creativity but eventually pushed him over the edge? Anyway, he was Floyd's main man in the beginning and I am sure an inspiration for some of the later songs.

One of my personal favourites.....

Effervescing Elephant

An effervescing elephant
with tiny eyes, and great big trunk
once whispered to the tiny ear
the ear of one inferior
that by next june he'd die, oh yeah!
because the tiger would roam
and the little one said oh my goodness I must stay at home
and everytime I hear a growl
I'll know the tiger's on the prowl
but I'll be really safe you know
The elephant he told me so
And everyone was nervvy, oh yeah!
and the message was spread
to zebra, mongoose, and the dirty hippopotamus
who wallowed in the mud and chewed
his spicy hippoplanckton food
and tended to ignore the word
prefering to survey a herd
of stupid water bison, oh yeah!
and the jungle took fright
and ran around for all the day and the night
but all in vain because you see
the tiger came and said "Who me?
You know I wouldn't hurt not one of you
I much prefer something to chew and
you're all too scant, oh yeah!"
He ate the elephant...

....Gerald, hes getting rather old but hes a good mouse.

When my lad was in his cot I used to sing him some of Syds lullabies....

The Gnome
I want to tell you a story
About a little man
If I can.
A gnome named Grimble Grumble.
And little gnomes stay in their homes.
Eating, sleeping, drinking their wine.

He wore a scarlet tunic,
A blue green hood,
It looked quite good.
He had a big adventure
Amidst the grass
Fresh air at last.
Wining, dining, biding his time.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Hoooooooooray.

Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Look at the sky, look at the river
Isn't it good?
Winding, finding places to go.
And then one day - hooray!
Another way for gnomes to say
Hoooooooooray.
Hooooooooooooooray.

The Scarecrow
The black and green scarecrow as everyone knows
Stood with a bird on his hat and straw everywhere.
He didn't care.
He stood in a field where barley grows.

His head did no thinking
His arms didn't move except then the wind cut up
Rough and mice ran around on the ground
He stood in a field where barley grows.

The black and green scarecrow is sadder than me
But now he's resigned to his fate
'Cause life's not unkind - he doesn't mind.
He stood in a field where barley grows.

Flaming
Alone in the clouds all blue
Lying on an eiderdown.
Yippee! You can't see me
But I can you.

Lazing in the foggy dew
Sitting on a unicorn.
No fair, you can't hear me
But I can you.

Watching buttercups cup the light
Sleeping on a dandelion.
Too much, I won't touch you
But then I might.

Screaming through the starlit sky
Travelling by telephone.
Hey ho, here we go
Ever so high.

Alone in the clouds all blue
Lying on an eiderdown.
Yippee! You can't see me
But I can you.
