you could improvise and buy a cherry bomb from someone like Larkspeed...you would get a better note from it aswell...

Best Bet, dont even bother with the cherry bomb, just get an extension made up that you can bolt on to the existing piece to allow the fumes to exit in the normal place, legal and sounds sweet!!  It should be fine for the MOT, as i only have a mid box on mine, and i've even knocked all the insides out of that so it's enough to make your ears bleed   .

I always (I say always, twice) buy mine from breakers for peanuts, you can get a near new one if you ring around, but if it's broken off level with the rear hanger ie behind the wheel then I'd just clamp a length on as has been suggested and see how you like it.

as a continuation of this topic, i'm in the boat were both our V8 96 Disco are going to need back boxes soon.

Both are blowing in the same place (rear most weld seem) - so what are my options??

Just take back box off and fit an extention piece??
There are Stainless Steel backboxes on ebay that looks good (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&category=38786&item=290015446626)

would like to keep costs down without sacrificing MOT passing etc

cheers

yep, filler is another option, never thought of that, although a nice shiny SS backbox would look nicer :)

RRR paid a lot more than that for a mid/back box.  Back box quoted £90 I think.
