Wire cables have a degree of stretch in them and when new they are very springy. If you wind the rope onto  the drum tensioned only by hand then the coils of wire will be quite loose (even if it does not look like it is). The wire has to be tightly and neatly wound onto the drum to prevent damage to the wire. If there is a layer of wire loosly wound onto the drum and you then wind the next layer on under heavy load, the loose wire can get crushed which is not good.

Weld your winch and bumper nuts and bolts
Some work men near me went for dinner Parked the Unimog in the road,and some one pinched the front hydraulic winch, takes four blokes to lift it but it still went in 30 mins.
Lad at work lost his bumper and winch
Remember it will come in handy even if you never use it
