Loud banging from front
« on: July 25, 2006, 21:09:56 »
The vehicle is a disco, V8 manual 1991.

I had a lot of fun in a mud hole a couple of weeks ago and knocked out the rear diff.  I drove it home in diff-lock, no problems and had a new(2nd hand) rear diff fitted.

After it was done, I founfd thet there was a bit of a popping noise coming from the front axle when turning left.  This was very intermittant, it didn't happen every time.    Because it was intermittenet I didn't worry about it too much but the pop became a bang followed by a grinding noise.  I stopped to have a look underneath but could see nowt wrong.  I got back in to move the Disco to a safer place and the grinding noise hastopped so I continued driving but at a very sedate pace.  The bang happaned a couple more times on the way home, followed by the grinding which I found dissapeared when the clutch was depressed.  The bang only happened on left hand turns/bends and seemed to come from the front off-side of the Disco.

I suspected the CV joint so tonight I stripped it.  It all seems to be in good order, no visible cracks and it moves freely.  So I stripped out the nearside and it is the same, seemingly in good order.

I'm now stuck!  Could it be the diff?  Could the transmission be stuck in diff-lock? (the light is out but I've heard of this happening)

any ideas?  All advice appreciated.

well i would have said cv at first but seeing as you have stripped them out  :? could the splines in the halfshafts be worn and jumping about in the diff end?

Gords had a diff problem where he lost drive on the rear and had a clattering sound, to look at the shafts you would not notice much but they had worn enough to slip round in the diff :?

Checked the wheel bearings ... they run a smooth as a baby's bum.  There is lateral play in all four of them but when the races and the bearings are put together (as they would be when fitted)they are very smooth.

The half shafts really have no discernable wear on them.

I have just cleaned the CV joints in isopropyl alchohol and they are very stiff.  I can only make them move freely by putting a bar in them.  The nearside one is slightly stiffer than the offside.  Are they supposed to oscillate freely or is stiff good?

if they are bone dry & clean they are normally a bit stiff, try some lube in them (light oil etc)

Thanks for your advice chaps.  I took the front diff out this evening and found this.  Do you reckon it might be what was causing the noise? :)
