THINGS TO DO / SEE IN NORTH YORKSHIRE
« on: July 26, 2006, 21:53:44 »
Going on holibags to Scarborough with the family on Sat 5th Aug - will spend 5th and 6th at Pickering steam fair and Sat 12th at Driffield steam show
Anyone got any ideas what to do in between ?
Don't mind doing the touristy thing round Whitby /Robin Hood's bay etc for a day or so but hope some locals may know of other things/places to visit
Been going for a few years now so already done Flamingo Land, Eden Camp
Never been to York - worth a visit ?
The nice part of living in a small town is that when I don't know what I am doing, someone else does

York is definately worth a visit. Its a great place for adults & kids, you won't find anywhere else that concentrates so much on the history of the place.Very interesting!!

Sat 12th at Driffield steam show

I'll sadly be missing Pickering (biggest in north of England), but hope to get to Driffield

They're right sadly. York is a drivers nightmare, unless you know certain streets with unrestricted parking & still just outside the city walls

There's the National Railway Museum at York (on Leeman Road) It's got 'Mallard', 'Rocket' (well, a replica), a Shinkansen (Bullet train)
LNER 4472 (The Flying Scotsman) is in the workshops undergoing a strip-down.
And it's free entry!!!

There's also the York Eye in the NRM grounds (about £6.00/adult), but it's the highest structure in York; bar the Minster.
Mentioning which, that's a beautiful building & a tribute to countless generations of stone-masons if nothing else.

There's 2 aircraft museums within easy distance of Scarborough & York

Leeds & Harrogate are wonderful places.
Leeds is a cathedral city & has a concentration of wonderful Victorian buildings

Ilkley is a spa town (like Harrogate) & has the unsurpassable Ilkley Moor as a backdrop

Railways again
North Yorkshire Moors Railway; 18miles through the moors betwen Pickering &  Grosmont

If you're in Scarborough on the Tuesday,Wednesday & Thursday & can check the arrival times at the station, you'll see the Scarborough Spa Express arrive from York at about 13:30??

Whitby has Sentinel Steam Coach services up the Khyber Pass, but it will at Pickering Steam Rally by the 'Old Glory' stand (click on icon in my signature)

Hope that helps, ask me & I'll tell you more

Check out my 'www' for ideas & images of various places

Thanks for the replies so far..................
Few mentions for Langdale - drove past this last year on that forestry commission road that has a toll - except I didn't pay cos it was late and no one to take money
Don't fancy taking the disco round cos I only bought it a month ago and knowing my boys we would quickly fall into "bet you can't get up there" mode
Hiring a puddle jumper sounds like a bit of fun though
Sounds like a mixed reception for York - maybe just go to tomcats mums for some cake instead

How far is the Humber bridge Mark ?
BTM - I'll be leaving home about 4.30 am on the saturday to get to Pickering - means I can spend 2 full days there - will do the opposite for Driffield - spend the day there and then travel back at night - gives me an extra days holiday and the roads are always quieter - will keep my eyes peeled for the 110 or the hat at Driffield !
HEE hee - while I've been typing this I have just received an email from Land Rover UK Forums - it's now after midnight and officially my b'day - nice of them to remember to send me b'day greetings cos I forgot all about it !
Anyway thanks for suggestions and kind words so far and keep them coming

York's nice, but it's a bit.............. overly 'twee' in places.
If you get into the snickleways, you see the better (less restored side) & that suits me far better.

Just rememberwith York, it's definately a touristy-destination (hence can be pricy in places (as already stated) & full of Yanks & Japanese, but also some beautiful buildings.

The name; 'York Dungeons' could possibly be a clue to its location

There's also the maze made out of Maize   just off the by-pass (eastern stretch of the A64)

The road over 'the tops' from Egton Bridge to Pickering is a wonderful run, it's not too long since a good stretch of it was still gravel
Some nice fords at Grosmont as well.

Further south, Beverley is a nice market town (with a Minster), with Bishop Burton not too far away, with its village greens, duckpond & 'The Altisadora' pub.

Driffeild  & Market-Weighton are nice little market towns (M-W has Peter Blachards ex-military dealer close bym & he's got 2 Centaurs!!!)

I think I may give York a miss if SWMBO will let me away with it - I bloody hate touristy places (says he staying in scarborough )
BTM - I tried to find these fords last year when doing a trip to Goathland (boring - apart from the trains ) countryside is very similar to here except flatter
Can you just turn up at Blanchards for a nosey or is viewing by appointment only ?
Last year I noticed a sign for quad biking on the main Scarborough/Pickering road - has anyone been there ? - didn't have time to look in last year

Try the wet-roads site, it gives map-referances & Multi-Map links (but not sheet numbers)

For standard parts & vehicles you just pull in

However, I'm given to understand that it you ask very nicely & tell them how far you've come, they may invite you into the inner sanctum
However don't quote me on that!
