anyone know if a later defender steering wheel will fit an early 90 (c reg)
Anyone got anything suitable spare? I just can't live with this 12 inch thing that came with it!

Matt....
Have a look here:
http://www.web-rover.co.uk/nav.php?p=articles/steeringwheels
Your C reg would have had wheel type A when new.

Hi Matt.
It's all to do with splines. Your C reg should have a column with 36 splines, whereas later defenders have 48 splines (generally speaking - they are Land Rover products and it can depend on what was around on the day of assembly!).
If it helps I've got a 36 spline Defender 200 2 spoke genuine wheel going spare. Not brilliant condition but very usable.
Cheers,
Jez

I noticed that an old disco wheel did fit but the plastic surround caught on the back of the wheel so without mods wouldn't fit (didnt really fancy a blue wheel anyway!)
What's your wheel look like Jez, is it the old huge plastic bus one like mine would have originally had or is it more like the later 'rubber' ones
Thanks

Hi Matt, I'm not sure on the accuracy of the text in that link. As far as I know it's all down to splines. The two types of wheel listed as interchangable are definately not. Clearance of binacle not withstanding, they are definately different spline numbers (early 4 spoke 36 splines, later TD5 type 48 splines (usually))!!
I'll look into it for you matey.

I've got a pair of Mountney 14-inch wheels for sale (only one 36-spline boss though), one in leather with polished alloy spokes and one in PVC with black alloy spokes.
Replaced with a Raid 12-inch c/w Snap-Off kit which is fantastic (thanks for telling me about that Jez).

I've got a boss with my mountney already (happily swap the mountney for a land rover padded wheel), the wheel is 12 inch and far too small for me (works well with the bucket seats I already removed!).. I think minimum 16 inches for me to be comfortable (get pains in hand and wrist otherwise)
Mine is defo an early column so any pointers Jez are very much appreciated :-)
