Pros and Cons - Hard Top vs Truck Cab
« on: July 28, 2006, 21:35:35 »
Okay - currently got a 90 Tdi full length hard top. Great for practicality, but a pain in the asphalt off road - especially in trees. So - I'm thinking of swapping to a truck cab. Pros seem to be - better off road (more clearance), can be useful, handy for throwing stuff in the back, more potential re future mods, roll cage, etc. Cons: not as practical, less space in cab (will the seats still recline properly?), lack of secure storage. So - has anyone done this and wants to share view (good and bad)?
It aint what you drive its the way that you drive it...

I think you have pretty much summed it up yourself. It depends how you use your truck. Mine is purely an offroad play truck So i swapped my hard top for a truck cab, visability is great and all gear is easily accessable in the back. Most annoying bit is if i have to park on the road then everything has to be removed from the back. I think if i wanted a more multipurpose vehicle i would stick with a hard top. :)

You can make a secure lid to cover the rear tub, that way you can keep a certain amount of kit on board with a reasonable degree of security.

I am building a king cab as i wanted a bit more cab space but retain the pick up look and area.
Not finished yet but you get the idea

Yes a friend built a sort of extended cab when his hard top got badly bashed. It's done so well you have to look twice to realise what he's done. It's only a small extension but it does let him get the seat back enough as he is generously proportioned and he can store some kit in there.

Worth the effort but I couldn't be bothered! I just have a truck cab and a padlock and chain that I loop through the high lift etc. in the back.

I have added pics to show increase in cab area.
Bulk head will be removed and straight on below new rear.
