Alarms and insurance Discovery "N" reg
« on: July 29, 2006, 09:05:50 »
DIrect Line wont insure my disco for theft unless its fitted with a thatcham cat 1 alarm.  Its an ES model and already has a land rover alarm.  Not sure it has an immobiliser, he immobiliser light never comes on on the dash so I assume not.

Whats the best way to go ? buy a thatcham alarm and get it fitted (removing the landy rover alarm or try an find a land rover alarm and immobiliser on eblag ?

Thanks

Mines A Flux too. Thinking about your alarm senario, take it from me if your imobiliser doesn't work then your engine won't start, if you unplug it then the alarm goes off constantly, the only other option would be someone has fitted the imobiliser bypass circuit before you had it. If so then you'll have to take the dashboard off around and below the stereo to visually check what is there, bypass or imobiliser. A Flux wouldn't insure us if it didn't have an imobilser but they were happy if it was a working factory fitted one.

The other thing to consider is if you want a replacement LR alarm and imobiliser then you have to get a set/pair, both coming from the same car as they are 'coded' together. An imobiliser from one LR doesn't work on another without re-programming. I've got a working spare from a 90 and it doesn't work on my Disco. You'll probably then have to have your keyfobs recoded by the keyfob man in birmingham.

Adrian Flux, cannot fault them.  "Has it got an alarm, good enough, no we don't need to see the paperwork sir".

Unlike Firebrand, they were useless last renewal so they can kiss goodbye the thousand odd pounds I was spending with them.

I've just insured my Disco (M-reg 300Tdi) with Adrain Flux, and they were happy with the standard alarm, but wanted a Thatcham-approved immobiliser fitted.  Phoned a few firms in yellow pages, got one fitted (mobile fitter) for £99 +Vat, so nothing to horrific (worst quote was £350!!).  Adrian Flux did want proof of all sorts tho, had to send an envelope full of immobiliser proof, drivers licence copies, club membership proof, no claims proof, etc, etc!! (glad they paid postage!!)

Me too with AF.

Disco's upto about M reg were Thatcham Cat 1 but became Cat 2 when Thatcham re categorised the scheme.

However, AF accepted that it was formerly a Cat 1 and was fitted with an immobiliser.

Your ES model will have an immobiliser......, but sounds like the units us.

If you call the guy from remote key, he'll help you out. http://www.remotekey.co.uk/

He fitted my D1 with a new system that he was testing and trying to sell to Land Rover and others. Spot on system with no issues.
