Discovery - Which type and what to look for when buying?

I am interested in buying a Disco (upgrading from Series 3 88, but which
engine 200 or 300 ? and what are the pitfalls, things to watch out for.
Looking to use for general family car and serious off roading.
Not wanting a newish one with black box computerised engine so I can attmept to do jobs myself (but not a total grease monkey  !  :roll:   :?:  :idea:

well where to start  :lol:  :lol: the 200tdi and 300tdi are just as good as each other  the 300tdi is more modern on the inside and outside than the 200tdi.... the things to look for on the body are the sills rotting inner wings door pillers and the rear floor where the fuel tank is!!! then from there its the usaul landy things i.e oil leaks joints diff gear box engine etc etc i would say also a dico is perfect for family and offroading there is so much scope with wot u can do to ema dn leave comfy enough for the family to enjoy.  :D  there probaly someother stuff too so im sure the nice people on ere will help

I prefer the 300 Tdi as having had both, I think it's more refined although general consesus is the 200 is easier to work on because even the early 300's have a certain amount of electronics controlling various things. Being of very large extraction, Ive come from series & hybrid 90's to the Disco as it's better for my size (6'6" & 22 stone - see wot I mean) and I can take the kids with me off roading.

Properly sorted for little money, they are a very capable beast off road.

The areas to look for are as PUX says applies to both models (and any other off roader) plus there can be a weak P Gasket on the engine that seals the block to the water pump, look for discolouration where coolant has bee leaking behind the right side of the pump/engine block (looking at it from the front.

I am interested in buying a Disco

If you come to the pub meet on Wednesday, there will be some 300's there, can't promise any 200's (but you never know  :lol: ).

Being happy chaps and chapettes, we'd be glad to show you in and around them.

I'm going to say go with the 200tdi.
(not biast but its what I've got   )
The 300tdi as said do have some electrical management systems although they are a nicer motor inside. A V8 would be great but if your using as an everyday motor then cost of fuel probably wont make it practical.

Buying is the same with most green ovals.
Start at the bottom and work up - chasis etc are a major point.
I got caught on my first disco as the rear cross member was supporting a large colony of tin worm. Unlike series and defenders etc disco's arnt worth the cost to re-chasis so if its rotten avoid it.
Also have a check of inner wings and sills. Inner wings arnt to bad to replace but its all expenditure but sills can be costly.
Check the boot floor - these rot out easily and cost about £400 to replace.
Look out for damp stains on seats as this can point to leaking seals in roof/windows.

im taking ours to shell island with us next weekend, so you can have a good look round then, but the kids MUST wash there hands before getting in! don't want it to look like the inside of your 110, chocolate everywhere!
