Its classed  the same as a steering rack gaiter. [Sect 2.2, d]

Even if you didn't fail the MOT with it you want to get it replaced ASAP as it will only promote wear in the joint.

am doing this job myslef this weekend. forgive my lack of technical language, but i have been informed there is a steel 'ring' that is quite difficult to remove from the drop arm. I was advised to put the arm in a vice and whack it with something suitable, but it's a tight fit and there's not much material visible to whack  :) .

Can you think what i'll need to get enough of a whack?

I used a dremel to cut the housing a little and get access to the race as it was badly worn away.
