Does anybody know anything about outboard engines? I have a Mercury 402 (made around 1975) which is running badly at high revs.

I would check the coil packs under the flywheel

The last on I had was a 2 stroke evinrude (Spelling rubbish!!!) 18 on a small crusuier, the coils packs packed up a few times

not worked on these for years
BUT
last time i had an old mercury engine with running problems
having tried all the usual bits
it turned out it was wear on the reed valves????

mercury have them on the crank (me thinks)
jap stuff have them under the carbs
this makes it very difficult to replace them
so check all the easy stuff first
Never underestimate the power of a sick mind !!!!

whats it doing at high revvs ?
stuttering ?
dropping of and picking back up?
or missfireing?
does it do it with hood fitted?, whats it like with the hood off
i have alot of problems with lack of air under hood which causes it to drop off in power
more info needed m8y really
