Winch Problems: GEW 10000 Stopped working.
« on: August 12, 2006, 12:37:35 »
Hi All,

I'm after a bit of info from anyone who knows their winches.

I've got a GEW 10000 and while winching Tonka Toy out of sand yesterday the winch just stopped working.

It winched out with no problems, winched in with a far amount of strain but not enough to stall it. Then we stopped winching to clear sand away from the front wheels of Tonka Toy and when I tried to winch in again all I got was the solenoids clicking.
The motor was warm to the touch but I wouldn't say it was hot.
The battery is fine, as are the connections and remote.

Before I start ripping the winch apart, has anyone got any ideas of where to start looking for a problem or any know failures with this type of winch?

Indeed....

On a 2 solenoid set up (like Superwinch uses) the winch will usually stop completely.

On a 4 solenoid set up (like most of the Warn stuff) the winch will often work one way but not the other.  (Usually it will pay out but not winch in due to the way they are wired)

Unless you have spare solenoids, or can get them cheap, it is well worth making the swap to a decent contactor like the Albright, since the difference in cost isn't huge.

Thanks Tim & Mikee,

I've ordered an Albright from Devon 4x4 this afternoon so you'll see website order on Monday Tim!!

Just need to free off the freespool now so I can get the Plasma off the reel until I get the Albright pack installed.  I've got about 70 feet of it sat in the passenger footwell at the moment!

The Allbright pack arrived Tuesday, cracking service there Tim!!  =D>

I think I'll do a tutorial for the Workshop on fitting the pack, may come in handy for someone later. I'm on 4 days off from tomorrow morning so, if it stops raining, I'll get  it done this week.

Just to finish this thread off..................it wasn't the solenoids at all, it was the motor. The motor end casing has a nice big crack in it and I don't know what the insides are like as I havn't taken it apart.

So, I've been out (read: sat on the puter) and got myself a Warn XD9000 from Rebel 4x4, best price I could find.  :D

I part-fitted it yesterday (before the rain started   ) and completed the job today.
As I had a spare Allbright solenoid pack in the garage that got fitted to save having any problems in the future and I wired up the in-cab controls as well.
I had to make a braket to mount the solenoid pack on as, for some reason, Warn don't make or supply one with the winch (like Superwinch do on the X9's!).
I've refitted the Plasma Rope and kept the alloy fairlead so, if I have a spare £100 burning a hole in my pocket at some time, I can get a new motor for GEW and sell it with the a new wire rope and roller fairlead.

i rekon that you'll pull the motor of the XD & put it on the GEW & fit an Xp motor to the Xd

I know the XD motor won't fit the GEW cos the GEW motor comes complete with the end casing to the winch drum, like this:

Nice idea though Mikee, but I think I've spent enough on winches this month already.

Well, as of yesterday it's in the garage with a duff motor and no solenoid pack in it.
The plan is to put the Warn solenoid pack into it and get a new motor at some stage. Then, because of the postage cost to get stuff off the island (about £35!   ), put it up for sale up here complete with new wire rope & roller fairlead.

However, if you want to make an offer on the winch as it is now and do the work yourself then go ahead. A new motor will set you back around £125.
