New Defender?
« on: August 17, 2006, 09:28:13 »
I've been browsing on 'LandRoverAddict' & found this thread, of an alleged prototype for the updated Defender.

If it's correct, that's a nice interior layout, complete with Range Rover/Mondeo style intrumentation

As the text on apge one says, it's only a test-mule

The Santana on page 2 looks just the same as usual to me :?

We've got some of these at work at moment.... haven't had chance to drive one though  :(

The engine is part of the Ford Puma Diesel range (as shown in LRE this month).   But I'm not commenting on anything else.....

The engine is the new Ford Transit/Mondeo engine rebored to 2.8 Litres.  This has been known for almost a year now.

Thought it was a straight four?  But then again, I never actually remember reading what engine setup it is other than a rebored engine to 2.8 Litres that was also going in the Transit and Mondeo (in smaller form in the mondeo).

Look at this on the what car website:

http://www.whatcar.co.uk/news-article.aspx?NA=221956\

Says it gonna be a 2.4 diesel with the same 122 bhp but 44 lb ft more torque. It's also gonna have a 6 speed gear box with a really low crawler 1st gear.

Those pics have been around for a while, would nice to see a bit more or perhaps somthing a little more up to date!!!

Interior changes are the important ones, they are ment to be doing away with the rear side facing seats which in a 90 make it, er, interesting! The new dash is good though, i wonder if they will add climate control instead of crappy air con?

The rear seating looks obviously far better, so long as it folds up properly in practice
(bet it's not removable; MPV style???)

Whilst it is good, turning a 90 from a 6/7 seater down to a 4 seater is a bit of a blow.

The seats do look better, i'm in 2 minds about the dash though, the new blower vents look good and the grab handle is somthing i've been wanting for ages.
