ECU, where is it?
« on: September 06, 2004, 18:02:33 »
Where's the ECU on a 300TDi, 110 :?:  On my last 90, it was located below the front middle seat :)
This 110 I have, has a rather dull and cheap looking centre console :-&  I was reseating it, thought I'd just check the ECU, and nothing :-s ...... Is it located elsewhere on a 110 :?:

Cheers

ECU

ermm, are you sure that you have one?

I thought that the module under the seat was for EGR if it was fitted on the later 300tdis

Not all of the 1995 Defenders have ECU's. If yours hasn't, then be happy! One less thing to drown!

Mine certainly doesn't have an ECU (it doesn't currently have an engine). It didn't have one before the engine was taken out either though :D

Cheers

300Tdi's with EGR valves have a small ECU under the seat to control the EGR only.. nothing to do with the actual running of the engine (i.e. still has a mechanical pump).

Apart from removing the EGR   ... there's nothing else that can be done with the ECU.  Any tweaks to the engine will be mechanical.

Late 300Tdi Auto's however, are ECU controlled.  The ECU controls the fueling - the injector pump is very different to a standard mechanical one.

These engines can be 'chipped' as per Td5's... and they also respond quite well to it.  All the chipping is doing is 'tweaking' the fuel map.

A geeky fact is that the ECU (and thus Auto) versions of the the 300Tdi are actually the most powerful version of the 300Tdi produced by the factory.

The full ECU controlled 300Tdi was never fitted to a Defender (though I would actually like to try it - if any one has got the bits lying around   ) - unlike most people, I'm actually quite a fan of ECU's   .
