Recently, when I am driving on road and I go over a small bump or a man hole cover the steering shakes a lot. Also when I go at speeds over 55mph it starts to vibrate too. I am assured the wheels are balanced perfectly by someone Itrust.

I have just had the wheels balanced.

I have checked the steering damper and it is well secured and is only about 2 months old.

What should I check? What is it likely to be?

Does the vibration happen under load? If so, what happens if you back off?

If it stops, try the U/J's on the front prop, or look for excessive cracking on the donut on the rear prop.

Now that you mention it, I think there is a difference when I am accelerating, decelerating and free wheeling.

The U/J is the interesting coupling that collects the prop shaft to the axle??

There is one at either end of the prop on the front, and one at the front of the rear, the donut is the rubber link at the back.

Try getting hold of the prop and seeing if it rattles.

Nope there is no movement to speak of in those joints

(He says hoping it isn't a bent driveshaft).

Has it been offroad or taken a bump recently?

no it has not taken any bumps, I would be very surprised if anything was bent. "I" think it is more to do with the steering, as it is the steering wheel which shakes most. It is not constant, as i said if i go over a man hole or a slight un even road surface it then shakes for a bit and then goes backto normal

Sounds a lot like the swivel pre-load to me.

There are shims under the top swivel pin. The number (and hence thickness) the of shims needs reducing as the swivel bearings wear.

It's not a particularly difficult job, if you have a manual check in there for swivel pre-load I'm sure that it will be covered.

i had same symptom on both my defender and disco and both times it was shot bushes in the radius arms, first time on defender i spent about a grand changing everything we could think off eventually i changed them cause i had nothing else left to change and that was it sorted.
disco started doing it about 2 months ago, sent it in to my mate, new radius arm bushes, sorted!, its the ones on the axle end, not so much the chassis end.

can be difficult to find , as said sounds like swivell pre loads. quite easy to check using fishing weighing scales. what s/damper did you replace it with. i once fitted an armstrong and it made things worst. to the point it nearly put me in a hedge. returned that and fitted a de carbon gas.improved no end. i changed the radious arm bushes too and panhard rod bushes. another thing that improved it was replacing the front s/absorbers. something else that also helped was to take out a bit of the free play in the s/box, carefull though easy to over do it and make the steering tight and cause excessive wear on the box, good luck. alan.....

i have exactly the same problem  :( ..... been tracing it for a while now ( 6 months ) to  begin with it felt like it was coming from the rear but convinced its the front......

i have rebuilt both prop shafts.....both front bearings all 4 wheels balanced and more.

yesterday i took the swivel pin out on the front nearside to have a look. well there were no shims there. so i had a look at the offside and there were 3 shims. i wipped on out and put it all back together.....  it did feel better for about 15 miles. now im back to where i was......

so im gonna change the swivel bearings and set the preload and then go from there........

just hope theres nothing shocking when i get around to doing it as this is my first attempt at this...... :roll:

Another thing to consider that we suffered with our RRC is that on some collapsible steering columns, there are nylon pins desinged to break in an accident allowing the steering column to telescope. Over time, these deteriorate and in our case snapped altogether.

This combined with some track rod end ball joints needing replacing produced almost exaclty the same result as described here.

I have a similar hing on mine. I think it is down to play in the steering uj, just before the steering box. But until i change it, i wont know.

You are gtting what is called steering kickback.  It isn't necessarily a steering problem though it can be made worse with sorn panhard rod bushes and of course worn steering components.  I had a b****er of a time with the LSE and I found at one point that loosening the rubber bushes at one end of the steering damper stopped the kickback, though you could still see the front of the car dancing about all over the place.

IIRC the checklist goes
wheel balance
Steering components
dampers, all 3
suspension bushes
steering swivel preload
bent/buckled wheels

Having done all of the above, trying 3 differnt sets of wheels/tyres I reorted to new springs which have cured it.

I recently had the same with mine, so I ordered a new Sachs steering damper, well that was frightening, nearly ended up in the hedge. I refitted the old one and sent that one back and bought a genuine one. That was no better!! So I am running with a semi-worn out one and it is fine.

Since then I have replaced all the bushes so I may try fitting the new one again and see what happens.

At one point I had TWIN dampers on the steering of Blue.
