Where's the Series vehicles?

EDIT:  The suitable vehicle largely depends on how much cash will you have and what insurance premiums you're likely to be getting.  Insurance can be pretty crazy these days for our age group.  It's possible to have a RRC insured for £500, yet a 2A could be £2,000 at the same time.

I would suggest an sj for your first offroader simply because they are alot smaller making them easier for learning to drive offroad with, relatively easy to repair, most parts can be picked up on the cheap.

Appart from being so much fun offroad.....................

To get you started a set of MT's and some good recovery points are all an sj needs and you will be amazed at where it will go in relatively standard form, leaving you time to save for more mods but still being able to play.

oh and another thing SJ chasis do not rot meaning no welding will need done underneath, the bodies to tend to rust but because of the independant chasis this is only a real problem where there are seat belt mounts or sharp edges.
When i'm good,i'm really good,when i'm bad i'm even better :)

If You can afford a straight 90 go for it theres nowt better but beware as there are some dogs at the bottom of the price range.  Zukes are ten a penny and a lot of fun.

After chatting to him on MSN, I suggested an SJ.  He just wants a vehicle to use on pay and play sites.

There is one thing I forgot to mention.  A good deal of Pay and play sites (to my knowledge, and I know for a fact my local one has done this!) do not allow vehicles that are not taxed or MOTed to go onto the site.

110. Just for the cool factor

Honestly, what can you afford? Basically you need up to 4k for a good 90/110, anything less and old Disco's are cheap now.

As is Whitworth/Cowm Quarry, but they won't let you on without the vehicle being road worthy.  It's because they have to cover themselves with the site insurance requirements.

If you can get hold of a 90 then go for it. They are brilliant cars.
Old range rovers are great too. Loads of parts avalible for them and easy to drive. They (like disco's) just have a long back end which can catch on the way into holes.
I would suggest an SJ. Nice and cheap, parts galore avalible, easy to work on and cheap to insure (if you want to drive it to events).
Let us know what you go for.
Good luck.

Light parts also for the SJ remember. ;)  A Range Rover, 90 etc. all have rather heavy parts, especially when it comes to the gearbox and transferbox in comparison to the SJ. :)

..... if you've got a decent job and no mortgage/family, go for a 300tdi 90 truck cab.... then spend a fortune on mods until its right for what you need.

1st off roader with no well paid job, get a zuk off ebay, doesnt matter its not mot'd as you'll only be using it off road. They go most places a landrover will and sometimes further....
PM "Naughty T" or "Redlinemike" and ask them for Difflock D5 pics, theres plenty of Zuks in action.... some flying through the air

Here you go a LINK to Naughty T's site.... some great piccys

SJ for first timers is a cheep good little toy to start with. Easy to repair and cheeper on insurance. Most insurance companys wont touch a young driver in a 4x4 over 2000cc, if they do its usualy very expensive. Not just that there is loads ya can do to a SJ to make it more fun.....

I think it's been said already, but the insurance will probably have the deciding vote.

Pound for pound you get a lot of car with an old Rangie.  Despite being lighter, better equiped and have a lower C of G than the Disco they don't seem as popular, the Disco having become very popular as the 'poor man's Defender'.

Series Landies are a hoot and beeing Meccano, very easy to keep running, but I suspect at your age it will be a Suzuki.  Small engine, light weight, economical if a little rusty.

Still, better than a Coarser with a dustbin stuck under the back and plastic skirts that make it look like a Dyson

Or less !
If its just for play sites then look for one with no MOT. A lot of them fail on body rust .As long as brakes work etc then you'll be ok.
I got one with only minor body repairs needed for £120. Had it 2 years and sold it for £120 !!

I voted SJ

on the basis that they are cheap to buy, and easy to fix

and cos they are little they are good to learn in

, but they do roll over a bit - the cute thing is that because they are light you can roll them back easy!  awwwwww

sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj sj!

put a cheap set of mud tyres on and away you go!sj's are cheap, very capable and enormous amounts of fun!there's no point spendin 1000's of £'s of a landie an then not taking to it or havin invested laod of money into it.zukes just add tyres an thats it no more is needed!couple of 100 quid and thats it.they go every where a landie will and places a landie won't/can't!

sj every time, the only question should be 410 or 413???

410 a 1 ltr engine with a better geared diff so more power than the 413.

413 a 1.3ltr engine that has more speed but looses it's low down power, however the way to drive a zuke is totally different to how you drive a landie of disco!

it's quite common for people to put 410 diffs in 143s,as is fittin a vitar engine(1.6).i had my zuke everywhere a landie went and on pay an play days went places the v8's where gettin stuck!

if you pm me your e-mail add i'l send ya some pics of mine.honestly for a 1st toy go for the zooki you'l love it!
