Help I think I have killed my disco!!!
« on: August 26, 2006, 21:17:18 »
Hi all i need some expert help
My timing belt snapped on the diesel so being a cheap skate i decided to do the job myself, everything seemed ok removed the head, checked everything there, all ok apart from bent push rods, replaced them and put her back together started first time!!!!
Then I tried driving her, It was like the Red Arrows formation team behind me! Black smoke everywhere and was totally gutless!! Spoke to a Mechanic who told me  i have probably got the timing out of sync for the injector pump, so set to stripping it down rechecking all the timing positions but to no avail now she just sits there turning over but not firing, anyone got ant ideas cos I'm all out

thanks in advance

If it was me i would double check the timing again and also make sure there was nowt else that went when the belt snapped also check the valves are definatly ok and not bent etc
favourite would be the timing is still out somewhere

hi
i would say timing as well.
The Tdi is a tough old engine, i have snapped the timing belt twice and only suffered bent push rods.
Re check the injector pump timing position

sounds like timing , smoke, i,d put down to pump timing. did you notice it pulled well as well as smoke ?. now it don't start you havent turned the engine any without the belt on. could get valve timing 180 deg out. then it would be firing on 4 instead of 1. never heard of one bending valves, think you would have to be unluky as the valves hit the head square on so bent pushrods is common and sometimes snaped rockers. pump timing is pretty critical did you use any pegs to time it up ?. alan....

Thanks for the advice, decided to take rocker cover off and check well erm 8 bent push rods and snapper rocker arm, i seem to have been timing it up 180 degrees out!!! so its a trip to the local spares shop for 8 new shiney push rods!

Then i will try again!!

I had a horrible feeling I was going to hear that.  All to easily done when the belt has gone but I don't think it was 180 deg out, unless you mean at the crank.

Make no assumptions, check everything twice.

It's not just a coincidence that the TDi can survive a snapped belt, it'sone of the things ebgine designers take into account, given the market for Defender and Disco it would have been designed with a sacrificial component ie the rocker.

I'm just glad its only gonna cost bout £30 (If I'm lucky)  Just have to put it down to being a NUMPTY!! Everytime I think its gonna get to the MOT something happens, I think its down to that green oval badge on the back!!
Just getting desperate to get off road, can't do too much with the V8 till I get the torpedo tanks moved from the sills (last owner)

thanks for the advice again, no doubt I will be posting some other obvious questions before i have finished!

Why move them?? They're bullet proof.  Mine only hang about 2 inches lower than the chassis and only 1 inch below the radius arm mounting.

I took mine down a load of greenlanes with the tanks underneath and ok they took a beating, but it only took the paint off them.  Oh yeah just make sure the straps are in good nick...  This is the weak point, I managed to rip 3 of my 4 straps off, but they now have 6 straps on them.

I did think about moving mine but I need the boot space.  So the only other place is in place of the petrol tank, but that's a bit pricey at the moment for me!

Yeah, and if you crank it over with the injectors out you should hear a hissing as each piston goes up on compression.  Only when you are 100% convinced it's right should you;

Check it one last time
Add fuel

best of luck
