Annoyed, dissapointed..
« on: August 27, 2006, 15:19:37 »
Before I start, this is no anti 4WD thread, just a "one person spoils it for all" kinda thing.
Ok, so, today I was out on my push iron (Mountain bike) on a road frequently used buy just about every form of liesure persuit vehicle, the lane is a "Public Highway In Character" meaning that it is a public highway, but not mettaled and is used quite a bit by off road people as well as walkers, cyclists, motor cyclists, horses etc..
Infact, the road is rake head road/ home wood lane/ kiln belnt lane in Holmfirth, near Huddersfield.
So, there I am merrly pedalling away when I hear in the distance some "Dixie" horns, not just once but several times in succesion. I carry on and notice that the racket is getting nearer, so I turn around to see a group of 4WD vehicles coming towards me from the rear, the Dixie horns still going, more or less constantly. The lane is fairly narrow and the noise going on from the rear is fairly intimidating as the vehicles get closer so I find a place to pull in.
So, I pull in, the vehicles approach, a Vitara first, who say thanks for me letting them past, then a M-reg Metallic Maroon Frontera who blanks me then fires his effin Dixie horns off again, followed by a Landy who aknowledges my gesture of pulling in and letting them get on with the lane, seeing as there are 3 vehicles and Im only on a Push iron thats seemed to make sence.
So, they pass, I leave a gap then set off myself to the tune of those b*stard Dixie horns again, what a knob, A, Why have them fitted, your driving a effing Frontera for f**k sake! not the General Lee and B why come out in to the country side and have absolutley zero respect for yourself (driving a Frontera), no respect for other road users, no respect for your mates in the group and no respect for the wildlife, what a [wee john thomas].
So, as I follow on, I catch up with the group only for the [wee john thomas] in the Frontera to anchor on, his mate was kinda close in the Landy and nearly piles into the back of him and I nearly pile into the back of the Landy, my fault for being a little too close but I feel sure this action was done to [throw it] me off, As I pass I get another round of those f**kin horns again!
I pedal away, although in a great stroke of timing I nip my tyre on a stone and get a puncture, as I pull in and start to fix it the group passes by and I get another round of Dixie! As his mates pass later I ask "Whats with your mate and his horn" they reply looking a little [!Expletive Deleted!] off "Oh, he gets off on it"
As the group trundle off into the distance all I can hear is that b*stard horn going! A walker approaches with a face like thunder saying "I think the group have now decided which way to go now" and as I set off I see patches of grass to the side of the track all torn up and rutted so I presume this is what the walker was talking about and the group had left the track and decided to dick about on the grass banks to the side of the lane.
On my return trip, I meet the park ranger and pass on the vehicle details to him, we both have a bit of a moan how one [expletive deleted] ruins it for everyone else and we both grumble a bit then set off.

So, I could never understand what it was that the "Bobble hats" had against 4WD users but now I can see if they come up against idiots like this then it will put everyone in a bad light.
I must say that although I do not own a 4WD vehicle I repair them quite regularly at my garage in Huddersfield, and I have been on Mud Club outtings in this area and regularly map read and just co pilot for other drivers. I cannot warrant buying one for the amount of time I have spare, I cannot really afford one and I do not have the space to store another vehicle, but I do enjoy the off roading that I have done.
Everytime I have been out for the day, sometimes with members of this forum the groups have followed the GLASS sugestion and just behaved really well, I just presumed everyone else was like this but that obviously isn't the case.
Luckily I saw no stickers on any of the vehicles to affiliate them with any clubs, I think they were just fairly local and out for the day, but there must be some form of organisation as they were in a group so they obviosuly met somewhere. The Land Rover was local as that had a "Landrover Centre" spare wheel cover.

Anyway, moan over, Im sure no one on this forum would behave in such a way, sorry for the rant, sure you know where Im coming from.

Simon.

I know the lanes in question very well & can thankfully say that on foot, mountain-bike, cyclo-cross bike or in my Landies, I've never met any pillocks like that.

A few months ago (March/April??) when I was up there, I even gave 2 tired looking walkers a lift back to where they'd parked at Brownhill Reservoir.
They'd walked down into Holmebridge & up to 'the Moss' & round Holmwoods Lane (I was heading the same direction)
They were most grateful and commented that they'd always been (met &) treated with respect by 4x4 drivers.

They looked like fully paid up members of the RA as well, bobble hats & trousers in socks   (yes, I know that's stereotyping)

Na then Simon.  I'm afraid it isn't that rare an occurrance to be honest although a lot rarer thean the bobble hats would admit.  I was in Derbs last year and Blue Disco was driving like a idiot on very aggresive tyres but we couldn't get his plate.  Glad You reported it as these folks do us no good at all.

did you get any reg for the idiot with the horns  :?:
From what your saying you do have a valid point its numb nuts like this who spoil things for the vast majority of people like MC members who drive responcibly.

Where the any kind of club affiliation stickers on vechicles as maybe worth reporting them to relivent club who may want to take further action

Sadly not.
I just think they were from town, just come for a ride out.

Like the rangers said "I hope they smack their sump on the step" [on Ramsden road]

Shame, looks like they didn't attempt the step as it looks like they bypassed it, mind you, would you attempt it with a Frontera?

Someone should mention to these idiots who are giving us all a bad name that....... there are play sites all over the country for tearing around on and having a laugh.
Some people just have no consideration for what their actions are doing to others :( .

Aye lad, well, the lane that leads up to it.
The one you are thinking of is Ramsden road/Ramsden lane.

Hi Richard, just great thanks. Not been on here in an absolute age. Been extremely busy getting my business off the ground. Been working for myself since we came up. (can you believe it's already over two years ago?) But only on a part time basis. just recently I've stepped things up considerably and finally kicked the job into touch altogether. Anyways, things are now very hectic, don't know where I ever managed to fit a full time job in as well, certainly couldnt do it now!! Still down in Yorkshire now and then visiting family etc...it's ever so busy down there isn't it?!!!
Cheers, Karl..

I don't think it's been dug out, it's more likely to be water erosion over the past few years.
It was last Thursday (24th)

Its a cool little lane but not as hard as those piccys make it look.  BTM's webshots piccys show it more realistically.

It's also got some wonderful views as well, as being 'cool lane'

As this picture of Phil Probst's shows it's certainly eroded since then (November 2003)
I know it's a certain amount of 'infill' but it's all gone now

It looks like it's been dug out since I was last on it.  I remember when I went on it last year and it forced you to take a path that had you at the following angle.

Oh yes, Jim-Willy, that Series 2A 88-inch is probably one of the most fun vehicles I have been passenger in.  Big grunty sherpa diesel with parabolics fitted, and a mentalist owner means it's quite a fun vehicle to watch and be passenger in.
