« on: August 28, 2006, 19:35:29 »
Hello All

HELP PLEASE

3.9 Auto with Borg Warner gbox (viscus coupling type)

Towing our caravan today pulling out of layby and there was a HUGE bang from tunnel area lots of grating and grinding and we stopped moving. When put into park and there was more grinding clicking sounds.

Now home thanks to bdown company and need to repair my poorly motor.  How can I tell whats gone, is it G box or Transfer box how (can) I test before removal.

Thanks in advance

stick in reverse,if it goes backwards box has died,

juck up 1 wheel & if you can turn it freely something inside the Tbox has died,

start it up & have some 1 put it in drive & see if any of the props turn, due to it being a borgwarner & it not driving i dout its a diff etc,

IMHO it might be the tail shaft coming out the box cos the way an auto works there aint anything that can really go bang & cause a loss of drive, then again in ther Tbox its either the input shaft or the chain

Put in reverse nothing happened

Jacked up D/S rear handbrake off in Drive and wheel turned from 12 to 10 past and wheel stopped, however at the end of travel the handbrake drum kicked as if the bearing at the output end of the back of the Tfer box was NG

Put in drive again and no props turned.

Sounds like a chain has gone in the T-Box, it's not unheard of and given you were towing at the time.....

Cheers gents

Located and stripped out replacement tfer box from a mates spare RRC
Started to strip mine down tonight and hopefully complete tomorrow

The oil that drained out was Knackered (brown) altho it definitely had ATF (Dextron 3) in as I put it in last year so its only done about 10000 at the most :?:  :?:

When the chain and gears wera the chain actually rubs on the casing, could be why the oil is discoloured.
