Wandering Disco
« on: August 30, 2006, 17:44:56 »
I have recently bought a 1996 300Tdi. Lovely motor, which nicely compliments my 1961 Series 2. Chalk and cheese they are, but the Disco seems to wander on the roads more than the 2. I guess I should be looking at the bushes. Any other pointers? How easy are they to replace?

Many thanks.

All the above, tyre pressures, tracking, panhard rod, steering, REAR radius arms bushes as well as fronts, badly worn tyres, shocks broken springs, steering box, lifted at all is it?

I always look at these first, then work your way round with the other possibilities mentioned, twice I had this and twice these flaming bushes had gone.
Try standing outside the drivers door, reach in and move the steering wheel up and down, watch the position of the front wing against the tyre, if the body moves and the tyres dont, guess what

Then fit polybushes, I don't care what anybody says, they cost £4 and once you have them in they can be changed every year in about half an hour (if you stop for a slurp of your tea).

Speaking of Panhard rods...

is there any benefit in a adjustable one for a disco with an extra 2" ?

and does anyone do a rose jointed one ?

The adjustable one allows you to realign the axle with the chassis as it gets pulled off to one side when you lift them...........and scorpion do a rose jointed one.

No real need. 2 inch lift will cause about a 2mm offset. All the rubber bushes will have move wideways movement than that! As for LR build tolerances!! :)

My D2 wanders, I found as the tyres wore down it got worse,
I put 2 new tyre on the rear - terrible,
new tyre on the front,  4-5 mm tread on the rear worked a treat. hardly wanders
