I am having trouble deciding what to do, so I thought I'd ask the audience :lol:

This car has cost quite a lot in the 2 years I've had it - I keep thinking that everything must be sorted now, but ...

With it's oversize tyres, it struggles on acceleration and motorway driving, so I've thought about getting an upgraded (Allisport) intercooler.

This is my only vehicle so it needs to be reliable and drive well on the road, as it does far more of that than it does of the muddy stuff.

The Freelander option (TD4 or early diesel?) is appealing as it's still a LR and would (should?) be fine for most greenlaning. It still has the potential for "enhancing"

Maybe I should start doing the lottery again....

I probably should have mentioned that (unusurprisingly) there is a very limited budget involved :(

And yes, I've already tried suggesting the the wife should sell the people carrier and get a Freelander (not enough seats or space)

I voted for sell it and get the Freelander, unfortunately you didn't have an option for a V12 to be fitted to the Freelander as well  :twisted:  :twisted:  :twisted:

You are missing another option:

Buy a 1.8 Petrol Freelander, swap engines then sell the disco to an MP  :(bigwicked):

That's what I am doing - selling the wife's td5 to buy a freelander diesle & nice caravan, oh & keep my truck of course,

Sell your BFG's and go for a slightly smaller tyre, say 245/75/16's. This will give you a little more oomph and still give you (probably) better ground clearance than a Freelander. Otherwise go the whole hog and go back to standard tyres. Cures the overgearing problem.

You could then add a standard size, but upgraded intercooler from allisports as they are much cheaper than the full width one. Again, this will give you a little more oomph, especially if you down size your tyres.

You could probably do both options above for the price of a full width intercooler, by the time you've recouped some money on your BFG's.

It's a comprise but probably the cheapest option all round.

Otherwise I'd go down the allotment route myself.

1. I have nowhere to store an extra set of wheels
2. It wouldn't help when driving to/from the off-roading (Wales, Whaddon, etc)

Tuff call, if you only do lite greenlaning ,then  Id go for a Td4 Freelander (the only one to have ) and use any spare cash for a good rope and shackles,only joking, I know what you mean about the gearing problem it does seem hard work to drive, and harder on the fuel bill....

You don't need to swap the whole gearbox Gordon, just get yourself a Defender transfer box, which is (reasonably) wallet friendly.

They have the same low range gearing, but a lower high range gearing as they run 235/85x16's as standard, so that would return your on-road speed back to normal and not alter your off-road speed.

The crunchy 2nd gear I assume relates to the main gearbox. The transfer box is OK as far as I know?

Yes, the crunchy second gear IS your gearbox, changing the oil will help, but won't get rid of it.

Your transfer box probably(?) is OK, what I'm suggesting is that you swap it for one off a Defender, which will lower your high range gearing and make it accelerate quicker on the road, back to roughly the equivalent of how it used to with 'normal' tires, as the Defenders use the bigger tyes as standard

get yourself an early disco, series or something for offroad fun

then spend the change on  a decent little car for the reliability bit

You dont need an Ali Sport intercooler.
Just change the fuel settings like mine.
Get yourself to one of the Burnham Off Roaders meets and i'll get yours changed for you.
Wow!!, what a difference!
Pulls up hills and i can overtake again.
Also try cleaning out your intercooler with Parafin.
Remove your intercooler.
Pour in 1 ltr and shake.
Empty
Pour in 4 ltrs and leave for a while.
Empty and re-fit
Feel the difference.
