Part shares in 2 narrow boats, 68' 4 +2 berth in Cheshire and a 56' 2 + 2 near Lichfield.
We will be out on the little one in the middle of October for 2 weeks.

Sadly not own one these days. :(

I am an RYA Dinghy instructor & safety boat driver. Used to teach @ rockley watersports in Dorset. Spent most of my free time back then racing everything from 40ft racing yachts down to high performance dinghys/cats like the RS400 and Hobie Pacific :D

Even done a bit of match racing in my time in the BT-RYA championships :)

built in 1922 in Barrow-in-Furness, twas originally a fishing boat, conversion to a motor sailer started in the 60's and took the guy 20 years

Been into boats with a mate since 13.

I had an unnamed Cathedral Hull sports boat till I was 17, Then another unnames 17ft river cruiser and then a fletcher and a Dell Quay. Now have/had a defunct 1960's speedboat with a 2.0lt ford Pinto inboard. I suspect as it hasnt moved for so long its gone :( I'm almost sure it has.

Mate worked his way up, doing one up while using another. His Current boat "Can't Swim!' is a 48ft powercruiser, old style sunseeker thats been fully restored and runs two Jag XJ12 engines. Man does it shift! :)

I am looking at getting back on the water next year if I can find a boat I like. Dad has built boats from scratcha nd we often think about getting one between us. Thing is, he wants an open fishing type thing and I want a Cruiser or powerboat that has some shelter.

Nother Fletcher would be good though :) Came accross a massive powercruiser a year back with twin Rover V8 EFI engines. Least a 35 footer and the guy wanted £2k for it. Needed some tlc inside and to the engine but was debated as a club project till it went.
I must confess the the activities of the UK governments for the past couple of years have been watched with frank admiration and amazement by Lord Vetinari. Outright theft as a policy had never occured to him.

just check the shift linkages, if its been on saltwater its probobly corroded solid. Theres quite a lot of places down here but thats not really close.

Mrs Thelobster and I have talked about getting a sailing dinghy in the past.

But we live in Surrey.  So honestly, given you have to store it, trailer it around, launch it, insure it, fix it, etc, how often are we going to use it?

So we decided to just rent a boat whenever we felt like it, on the basis that we'd still be saving thousands of pounds in the long run.  Works a treat!

most places by the water have somewhere you can keep em, depending on how you look you'll find something. Sure if you want CCTV etc etc then you'll pay for it. Mine have always lived in a little padlocked yard for £80 a year and never had any trouble.

no disrespect, but gear linkages dont corrode and sieze
the most common cause of not bein able to select gear is adjustment
for those with controls its 9/10 cables need adjusting correctly at the engine end
and for those on tiller, its the splitter in the leg that as worked itself loos as usual and is slipping
in vary rare cases where water as found itself in the gearbox, its rust the clutch dog
danny
my bet is adjustment

I have two Pentas that would argue with that but this isnt the place. I wouldnt have thought an engine that size would be bothering with remotes but maybe it would.

Gear linkages? Cables? This little engine ain't even got a reverse gear when it works (you have to spin the entire thing round to go backwards!!).

Anyway- the lever (arrowed) on our Mercury auxillary engine won't shift between in-gear and neutral if anyone has got any ideas?

Well I dont own a boat but I'm involved in saving/assisting them & their passengers/owners/crew on a day-to-day basis as I'm in charge of one of the 4 watches in the Operations Room at the Maritime Rescue Co-ordination Centre (MRCC) here in Stornoway.  :D

I do get to go out on the company vessel occasionally though!!

my bet is on the selector shaft running down the inside of the leg
and alot has come on sincce volvo pentas
we wont touch them no more too old, just a liability
i wasnt sayin it had cables, i was just stating the common causes for both remote and tiller controled engine's
and over both types it 9/10 times just need adjusting and isnt a mechanical problem

have a look half way down the engine just under the transom bracket and above the cavitation plate on either side for a oval rubber blanking plate
i cant remember what the select method is on brownbands, been a good 2 years since i last seen or touched 1
