Sorry to bring them up again.
Article from the latest Ramblers newsletter.
We are receiving reports from around the country that some rights of way, which cross railways on the level, are being closed by means of traffic regulation orders. These closures are being made because the horns on new rolling stock are louder than on older trains. Drivers are obliged to sound their horns on approaching the crossings and local residents have been complaining about the increased noise levels. The solution so far seems to be ‘close the path’ so that the horn doesn’t have to be sounded.
We need to assess the scale of the problem so that we can take it up with the appropriate authorities. We all appreciate the need for safety at level crossings but simply severing paths by means of traffic regulation orders does not seem to be the best way of approaching this problem. It could easily lead to trespass on the railway.
