Front centre seat
« on: September 11, 2006, 23:40:30 »
Does the centre seat need a belt legally on my '76 S3?  I am guessing it had a lap belt as standard but mine has gone.  Seems odd that anybody could be bothered to remove the clip even if they took the belt out.  Stupid novice question i know but i just noticed.  Any pics of one fitted would be really good aswell.

Cheers in advance :)

My 1982 S3 doesn't have a centre lap belt either and there is no visual sign of one being there in the first place.  However, I do have difficulty in imagining how somebody would sit on the centre seat and the driver being able to change gears!  hmmmm.....

Aye, mine has no trace of a belt either which got me wondering :? .  If i need it legally to take a 2nd passenger i s'pose i will have to get one (hope not or it is another daft bit that is missing).  We used to travel 3up in my uncles old 86" S1 when i was a boy but that had no belts at all.

mine has a centre lap belt, but its totally different to the other belts, looks like it was robbed from a scrappy or something
and i regularly had people sitting in the front when i was 17.
obviously they had to be nice slim young ladies   otherwise they wouldnt fit :D

I've fitted a lap in the middle of daisy 1975, kids love it! just got to becareful with elbow up their nose! Have fitted it to the bulkhead behind seat with a bit of 3mm plate as a spreader as I think the bulkhead might be a bit flimsy - not had a MOT yet with belt so we'll see in march! :?

Mine has no middle belt either, (1973). Seatbelts were probably not a legal requirement back then, just like rear seatbelts weren't required till 1980 something.

The law mandating the compulsory wearing of seat belts for front seat occupiers came into force on January 31, 1983

Hardly Legaly binding but seeing that I guess you don't have to, Incedently my Landy was made after this and has 3 front seatbelts fitted as standard, I will grab a snap of it if you would still like a pic.

I seem to remember there being a plate in the front dash of my dads 1971 LWB, it  read something along these lines "the safety harnesses in this vehicle comply with the ...blah blah..".  It didnt have a belt for the front middle seat or any of the second row seats when we bought it.  The front centre has now been replaced by a cuddy box, and the second row have got seatbelts on the left and right seats.

My SWB doesnt have a centre seatbelt either.  I can drive alright with 2 people in the front with me.  The person in the middle has to keep both legs in the passenger footwell and excuse me for touching their leg when selecting second (It's a seat for the smallest, which tends to be female).

I found it ok for the person in the middle to have a leg either side of the gear lever. Even went off roading with people in the middle. Yes it was generaly a female who was smallest and in the middle. Only down side to off roading was if you start to lean and the person lifts thier right foot up like my mate did alot it pulled the hand brake on and you didnt know until you wondered where all the power had gone!!!

When I bought mine it had a middle seat belt. It was just a lap belt. It was bolted through the same bolts as the driver and passenger belt mounting points for clip. I installed retracting belts for out side passengers and mounted one of the 3 point over the shoulder belts to the middle seat. again using the driver and passenger clip mounting points and the top of the belt to the top of the bulk head. £ point seat belts all round then! Even safer than a lap belt.

Oh and having an overdrive with the person in the middle was erm, interesting. Alot of aplogising

I used to do the gears for my Dad. Got around the problem. Also he took his diesel S3 to the south of france with a caravan and back 3 times. I am sure my hearing has suffered for it
