Allisport Stage 2 Intercooler
« on: September 14, 2006, 09:52:49 »
After reading yet another happy post about someone having their intercooler swapped out by Allisport (on the Discovery Owners Club Forum), I'm thinking about having it done myself.

On a 1998 TDi with air con - how much am I looking at, and are there any alternatives?  I already have the EGR blocked off and Allisport Silicon hoses fitted.

Thanks
Horness

Having been to Allisport quite a few times, I'd definetly recommend them!!!   Andy's making me a custom intercooler for my 90

Just had this back from Andy...
Quote
We offer a number of upgraded intercooler options for the Air Con models, designed and built by ourselves. The first is designed to fit into the original mounts next to the radiator. This has been redesigned to gain an extra 50% more surface area over standard and will provide 18-20% more power and torque in the lower and mid-range revs, which is ideal for towing. Throttle response will also be improved along with fuel economy.
We prefer to manufacture from scratch rather than just “re-core” an original Land Rover item, allowing us to use a far larger and more efficient core.
This is an easy DIY installation job and will cost £285+vat.

The second option is suitable for manual gearbox models only. This involves the installation of a much larger intercooler in front of the radiator and A/C system. There are pipework extensions to connect to the engine and turbo, which necessitate cutting two holes through to the engine bay. The benefits are greatly improved, up to 35% improvement in power and torque for £410+vat.

Thermal stress is actually reduced as the EGT or combustion temperature is reduced dramatically.  As your vehicle is not electronically controlled, there is no ECU to remap, so we optimise the fuel and boost settings to match the intercooler mechanically.

We are offering a free fitting service which would take 2-4 hours depending on the conversion, otherwise the kits are available for DIY installation with comprehensive instructions.

We also manufacture highly efficient uprated replacement aluminium water radiators and silicone water hoses, if this is of interest, I would be happy to give you more information.

I hope this is of interest and look forward to hearing from you.

I think I'm going for the BIG one.

I've asked about the aluminium water radiators and silicone water hoses too.  If the price is right, may get them done at the same time for major engine blingage.  8)

The radiators are very nice!!!  8)

For bling, they also make....

Aluminium radiator mounting panels/frame work - replaces all of/or part of the steel frame that holds the intercooler/radiator

    AluminiumFuse box cover

    Aluminium brake master cylinder cover

    Aluminium screen wash bottle

Aluminium header tanks (that don't split like the standard ones)

    And aluminium intercooler pipework.

Have a look under the bonnet of the disco they take to all of the shows!!!    8)  8)  8)  8)  8)

Just bear in mind that you may not be able to fit a winch, on a close fitting bumper, if you go for the full width intercooler. They put in front of the air con one which means it may get in the way of a winch.

Now that's a very true statement

Just had them make one for Mathilda, very nice and keeps her nice and cool when being thrashed.

On the basis of the quality of that, I was considering getting Heather one as well, but she decided that she wanted a standard rad in a hurry, but that's another story. Might still go back to Allisport for an intercooler upgrade sometime soon.

Regards

Wolfie

OK - upgraded intercooler I can understand... but why go for an Alli radiator?

Sell it to me guys - I'm on a mission to get my Disco finished (all mods etc.) by the end of the year!

Looks bling       what more do you want???

But also:

They last longer - i.e. wont' corrode

    More effective heat dissipation

If you're having a front mounted intercooler, Allisport can make you a larger than standard radiator (fills most of the gap where the intercooler used to be, but still allows room for intercooler pipework)

    Looks bling

Available in two different cores depending on whether you do a lot of off roading or not.

If you're running electric fans, can come with an inbuilt radiator cowl to suit (as per Wolfie's)

    Matches your intercooler....

Had this from Andy
Quote

Our rads are constructed using a light weight core which dissipates heat extremely well. The engine will be able to run at a constant temperature rather than the original system which is only just able to cope when working the vehicle hard or on hot days. Basically there are two sizes available for your car and all are constructed with an oil cooler as standard.
The first is a direct replacement for the original but we make better use of
the space available by reducing the size of the end tanks and increasing the size of the core so that the overall outside dimensions are the same but surface area is increased by over 30%. This rad is £355+vat.

The second option is suitable when using our larger intercooler as it is constructed 65mm wider than a standard core to use some of some of the space freed up by removing the original intercooler. The design is as above but surface area is increased by 40% over standard. This option is £385+vat.

Again, we offer free fitting for radiators.

The plastic header tank suffers from splitting around the seam and can be replaced with an aluminium one for £75+vat. This will also help to radiate extra heat off.

Another product which may be of interest is our silicone water hoses which are now available.

:(kerching):  Larger Type 2 Radiator
:(kerching):  Aluminium Header Tank + Pipework
