Offroad Prep for 2006 RR TD6

Hello all,

I am looking for some advice on wheels amongst other things for preping my RR for offroad use. Its a 2006 RR Vouge SE TD6 with 19" Standard wheels.

I want to get hold of some extra wheels to put dedicated offroad tyres on, the problem is I can find nothing online to help (Unless I want to buy somewhat useless sparkling 22" pimp rims of course and then every man and his dog has some! *shudder*). Short of going back to Land Rover and buying a full set of 19" or 18" from them I am stuck. Whats the story on fitting wheels from an older model? Bolt patterns and offsets etc?

I know that I can get 19" MT tyres, but I would preffer a smaller rim with a bit more choice of tyre type, and a bit more side wall.

Also does anyone know anywhere to get under body protection for this model?

Thats it for now, any help or advice greatly recieved.

p38 rr rims have the same stud pattern but u would need to get a set of wheel nuts for a p38 and u would also need to have the center made larger by about 2mm diameter i think but i am not shure wether 16inch rims would fit over the calipers if thats any help

Actually I found a set of four 18" RR wheels online at a good price. So now I just need to find a good set of tires to go on them.

Thats not such an easy thing either! From what I can find the only readilly available tire is the General Grabber AT2 in 255/55R18. This seems to be a good tire but I was hoping to go slightly oversize not undersize. This is a 29" diameter tire when the standard fitment for 2006 RR is 30" diameter.

Not sure what impact this is going to have if any, but it just doens't "feel" quite right going smaller.

Anyone know of any alternatives for this size?

Hi there . .. check my galleries. I have a 2006 Vogue SE SC which I put 19" rims with MT/R's on (despite LR saying they would not fit). THere is also some other stuff in there regarding recovery points.

The wheels and tyres are for sale if you are interested :-) They are 255/55R19 Goodyear MT/R's. On road they are noisier than normal, I have just taken them off due to the fact that 400bhp on wet roads with muds is far far far too silly. THey are *awesome* in the sticky stuff tho!

Hi.
In my opinion for the price of the wheels/tyres you could buy an old classic, thrash the crap out of it, dint it, scrape it and basically abuse it, then sell it for spares  :lol:
Honestly, I know I may never be able to afford such a nice RR so if I ever did I would be so so scared of trashing it I wouldnt have the heart to off-road it, even though it goes against the grain, :oops:  (as that was what it was made for????)

The Range Rover is the BEST vehicle I have ever bought. You can drive fast (or get to a speed quickly) in it, then nip off down a green lane without fear of grounding.

TBH why not

its rather obvious when you pull up to the lights in an evo FQ400 what uve got to play with,when you pull up to the lights in a defender/rangie runnin with 200+ then its just pure giggle factor for the wee man to yourside who is about to get a new sheriffs badge opened up for him

my mate had nosi his land rover i fort that was stupid cos when u going to use that, most probs get over a ton and the rivats most probs will fall out of it!!

I dis agree there.

Why should thrasher not have a 4x4 that could out run a lot of cars? There's not much else that could cruise so easily on the M-Way at around the tonne mark, and then jump straight onto a green lane. He only has to pay for one lot of Fuel, Insurance, Tax ect... but basically gets 2 vehicles in one.

If 400bhp is pointless in a 4wd, surely it's equally as pointless in a road car? 70mph is the maximum legal speed you can hit in this country.

Aren't lots of the top sports cars 4wd, anyway?  :?

Thanks for the offer Thrasher but I already have the 18's and I think my wife might get a bit upset if another full set of wheels turns up. Just have to find the tyres for my 18s I think.

Where did you get the rear recovery eye?

To answer some of the other posts... yup it would be cheaper to get an old landie of somesort, however... first I live in Jersey so there is limited availability and as soon as you try and bring something in there are lots of costs and taxes which make it a lot less attractive. And second I have nowhere  to put it, which is probably the bigger problem! Soooo that leaves and extra set of boots for the Rangie and some _very_ careful offroading!  :D

And for the record I would love to have 400bhp too, but I have been told by the local dealer that the RRSC owners over here (of which there are quite a lot) are getting about 6mpg at best 9mpg! Now thats just silly when after 2.5K my TD6 is doing around 22mpg over a tank. Hilly and urban style driving, not a good combination for fuel economy. Out of interest what do you get out of yours Thrasher?

Anyway to drag this back on topic a little does no one have any suggestions for 18" Tyres other than the slightly small General AT2?

The Horsepower isn't a problem, using it wrong is.

What 400bhp means is that thrasher can reach comfortable cruising speeds quickly and easily where as other cars would take longer, therefore being safer especially when pulling out of a junction.

So Dan, I assume then you are going to go out and buy a 1.0 Citroen AX as you really don't need any more power for the roads? They can match all the speed limits.

Oh and just cause its got 400bhp doesnt mean you got to use it all the time.  My bike does well over a ton but I sit on m/way at 80 and cruise,
It also pulls wheelies but I ride it on 2 wheels. and still have a clean license  8)

my golf has 35 bhp at the fly wheel and gets to 60 in just under 30 secconds and stops in about the same time so beat that :D

Easily... 110 TD. 75 coming out of the engine in 1989, then it's gotta go through the flywheel, transfer box, shafts, axles, AT Tires, 0-60 is in glacial terriotry and stopping involves lots of screeching and locked rear drums.
