waterproofing a V8?????

This is gonna be the first thing i do when i pick it up and was just wondering what i need to do etc with what???

Distributor, coil, HT leads, air inlet...

Dependant upon age/model, fuse box (if in engine bay), relays, etc.

It already has a snorkel so inlet is sorted.

Its a 1988 3.5 V8


How is the best way to go about waterproofing the coil etc..........???

Tuppaware and silicone but be careful, put any electrics in a box and they run hotter, did it with my electric fan relays and they melted.

There's lots of stuff already on the forums, use the "search" facity at the top of the page.

What you'll need to do depends a lot on how deep you want to go, and it's perfectly possible to keep a V8 running happily even when all the electrics are fully immersed, have a look at http://www.rhel.co.uk//tomcattech/dizzy.htm for some suggestions.

If you want to get into pricy mods, you could always go for a military waterproof set up http://www.douglassmotors.co.uk/offers.asp?offset=5

I know this will not answer the direct question, but thought some of you might be interested.

Several years ago I worked in an Aquatic / Water Garden store, (now in IT, don't know how that happened) but anyway, I still see friends from the old day's, one of the lads told me about this water proofing spray this guy had sold to him, he said it will water proof anything electrical, to prove this he had a 3 pin plug with a cable attached and the live wire showing, he then sprayed this repellent on to the wire waited 30 seconds and put the wire in to some water, he then put his hand in the water :shock: Now been a belt and braces sort of guy, I wanted to see it for myself, so my mate carried out the same test, which I am glad to say worked, I am going to test it out on the HT's etc and I will let you know how it performs.

I used motorbike chain oil as a temp measure, spray it on before entering water. worked a treat in 3 foot of water

I used to use spray grease but it gets messy after a bit....

There is an article in the latest LRO magazine, in the "New Stuff" section on page 22, an aerosol can called CORROSIONX LUBRICANT, according to the write up they sprayed a TV and it still worked underwater.

Its expensive though, £8 for 50ml and £24 for 400 ml.

I used to run a bead of silicone grease around the base of the dizzy cap before putting it on. Then lift the rubber caps off all the HT leads on the dizzy and spray with Holts Damp Start. Before the Damp Start dries, slide the rubber covers back in place.
Do the same with the coil and if you can mount some sort of plate in front of the dizzy to stop water getting splashed on there in the first place the you should be okay for most Pay'n'Play sites.

Hi Pete, been away on hols, might get chance to put it on tomorrow, but then im away for a few weeks, back on weekends ill run her through packington ford, loads of rain at the mo.

Used the H20 water proofing spray today, loads of floods on the road, had the spray well over the roof and all is well although I was going to go to packington for a test, filled the boot fuel tank up and after a mile was as high as a kite, checked in to it and the nozzle that has been welded to the tank is leaking so had to return home, ill let you know once its had a good ammount of water arond it.

there is no ml on the can, but it went in about 15 -20 seconds, but did get a good covering on the dis, coil and leads.

It's a shame they never used the Aquastop on the label as the rain made it go all squishy LOL found the website for it.
