Halfshafts

Can someone tell me what halfshafts i have in my 04 TD5 90 as i "appear" to have broken one today at whaddon!!  :shock:

Are they 10 or 24 spline, and part numbers if anyone knows would be excellent :)

they will be 24 spline as all defenders post 94 chaged to 24,

YES!

Got back about 9:30 and my defender is still with the recovery people who are returning it tomorrow!!


Mike - its a rear, not sure if its LH or RH though. My chassis number starts 4A (but you probably knew that) :)

it will be 24 spline due to the age,you running steels or allys?

might be an idea to pull both rear shafts n see what ones broken,id happy wager a small fee on if its a bust shaft that the broken bit will be stuck in the diff

If its stuck in the diff, do you mean STUCK, or just a pain but extractable with a magnet?

Any idea on cost of 24 spline shafts then?

Not too bad, £35 + the dreaded.  Congrats matey i have not managed to snap one yet but it is only a matter of time the way i apply the power 8)

What tyres are you running? Looking at avatar you are running standard General Grabbers on Boosts. Have you done any other mods like rear diff locker? If not get it replaced under warranty from LR, assuming that as it's an 04 you should be still under warranty. Even if you have you could chance it by asking - they can only say no.

If not and you have the funds, replace with Ashcroft HD halfshafts instead of standard. You'll need a pair of their drive flanges too.

Just had a look at the ashcrofts site and its not bloody likely at those prices, £260 for the shafts, and £85 for flanges (out of stock!) so i can break a lot of normal shafts for the price of those!

I've herd from Landrover in Thames Ditton and its being replaced under warranty :D

Indeed, basically i can do whatever i like for the next year as tis covered by warranty....:D:D

I know someone like that, so far its 3 rear diffs and 6 transfer boxes and a few other bits. Its a td5 110.

Get yourself a Magnet on a stick from X-Eng and if it happens again, pull halfshaft out and drive home with diff lock in - save you calling a flatbed. Or get a spare set and replace.

Ashcroft are expensive but they are fit and forget, even if you fit a rear locker you'd be hard pushed to break them unless you start to put 37"+ tyres on :) More money but a lot less hassle than halfshafts breaking.

Are you running your BFG's on the Boost alloys? If so the offset on those is horrible and so steering off-road is less than ideal. You might want to consider selling Boosts and replacing with steel modulars. This will fund your rear halfshafts!

Really, I'm running MT's on mine and don't have a problem....

Has been made better with a set of wheel spacers though... proper steel hub centric ones, not alloy jobbies or flat type.

Also, all the G4 Defenders don't seem to have a problem... and the off set is virtually the same as a standard Land Rover steel wheel  :?

I'll get myself a magnet on a stick when its out of warranty!! So far i've been recovered, had 2 hire cars (still got 1) and got a main dealer in london to fix the vehicle without quibbling for FREE!!

How is the offset on the boosts affecting the off road driving? I dont see how that can be. Also i like them, they look nice and its my 18,000 mile a year road car too, not just a play thing.

As you say Ian you have put spacers on.

The turning circle is not as good with Boosts on and hence why they are not as good off-road IMHO

I can't say the turning circle ever bothered me....
The reason I fitted the wheel spacers is because when twisted up, one of the rear wheels (the side with the suspension compressed) would touch the rear spring mount - well brush against it.

The added benefit was the improvement in turning circle.... not that much different though, but slightly better.

And it looks better with wheel spacers    8)

what tyre size and width are you running? It would be certainly noticeable on 33", 255 or wider tyres

I run 265/75's on mine with the boosts and cant say i have a problem with the turning circle, its a defender, the turning is ment to be crap!

Always glad for any suggestions steve, but on an 04 plate like mine the sale of the alloys would certainly have a big detramental effect on the resale value of the vehicle so i'm keeping them for now.

Ads for the shafts, i dare say one out of warranty in a years time when i break them i'll go ashcroft or other HD shafts, til then LR pay so i'm not overly fussed!  8)

Can't speak for smo, but I just like bling  8)  

Even if my 90 did get described as a famers spec 90 a a few months ago in LRW  :?
(though to be fair, the first bit of the paragraph was " A stealthy looking, QT Equipped......)

In all honesty I do like boost alloys though, hence why I run wheel spacers to overcome the fact they are not that big of an offset....  I haven't really seen an aftermarket wheel I really like (well not one I can afford) and Mach 5's are a bit 'common'

Well i saw the shaft yesterday, "interesting" - got a massive twist in the splines from the torque before it snapped, looks very impressive!!!

However they cant find one to replace it with, which is not good. Stuck with the freebie for a bit longer it seems.

Yes, if its fixed in time then i'll be on my way up Mike, however there was no sign of a replacement shaft earlier today and it needs to be fixed and back with me before midday tomorrow if i have any chance of making it up from london!
