Disco 1 Winch Bumper....Which One..???
« on: September 20, 2006, 17:26:04 »
Hello all, I am after buying a winch bumper for the old gal, which do you think is better, the tubeular type or the square type..?...I am also after a winch to go with it and wonder about the new ones you see on ebay, there is one that has a 11,000 pound pull, 6HP and wireless remote, its £279 I think...seems cheap...I dont want to pay silly money as its only for my offroader..gota be worth a go dont you think..?

Regards, Terry

It's all really down to personal choice. What do YOU feel would look better on the front of your Disco?
Me, well I've gone for the square tyre one that I got from David Bowyer, it's strong, will last for years, you can Hi-lift off it and I feel it suits the motor.

As for the winch: You get what you pay for.
All the new winches you see for around £300 are made in China and spares are the same price as makes like Warn & Superwinch, if you can get them!!

I had a GEW 10000 (same winch as the Champion C10000G-S, just a different badge) on the Disco for about 2 years. Now don't get me wrong, it was a good winch and pulled well but the paint soon started coming off and the motor gave up the ghost last month and it's not really worked that much. A new motor for it is over £125!

I now have a Warn XD9000 which I know I can get parts for in the UK, the coating is far better on it, the winch is faster than the GEW and overall you can see the difference in quality.

If money is no object (and you want the best) get a Devon 4x4 one.

Failing that the Scorpion Racing one is nice and snugg

The bumper is down to your personal choice, and what style you want.  Some have shackle and jacking points, some only have shackle points.  Some stick out more than others, some require the grill to be trimmed to fit your winch.

RE the winch, remember where you will be when you are using it.

Exactly - you're going to be in a situation where you need to recover either yours, or another persons vehicle, possibly in the middle of nowhere.  If you are happy to rely on a budget winch to get you and your pride and joy home after a momentary lapse of concentration, then like the bumper - it's your choice.
As well as this - think about spares, service and support for your winch.  It's a pretty big investment, you don't want to be replacing it every couple of years just because you cannot get spares for it.

Just my thoughts as I've been doing the same lately.

Devon 4x4 sell them but you best read up on it as there is alot of cutting to be done and the kit for the 5 door model is not the easiest to fit as you have to cut into the main framework of the rear doors.

The cut-outs:

Thanks for all the posts guys, I am going to go for a champion winch I think, are they any good...Or what about the new Birtpart ones in LRM...As for the bumper I must admit I like the tube ones, they will be a bit lighter than the square type too I think..

Here's mine.
i liked the Discoparts one for several reasons

-It's sectional, so a doddle to fit (1-bolt on the two chassis brackets(which incorperate High lift points+recovery eyes....2-bolt on the winch tray.....3-bolt on the tubular bars.....Hey presto!

-If you need to work on the front end the bars unbolt in 60 secs

-Should you bend the bars(or any other bit, you can replace the damaged part(eg£70 for the bars)

-The approach angle is far superior to just about any other winch bumper

-It's light as a feather (always a good thing)

And last but not least at £180 (i paid £150 on the last day at Driffield Spring show) it's cheaper than the cheapiest cheap thing

Plus I think it looks mean as ***k

But that's just my opinion. :D

That discoparts bumper looks a bit wrong imho. I really want a d44 bumper as i think it's the best looking one and you know it will be a quality bit of kit but the price is a bit of a stumbling block £325+vat

I agree with Spanners - Scorpion is the best winch bumper - nice n sleek looking and not 'in ya face' plus you can fit the two swivel recovery eyes.

Well guys just an update, today I have ordered an new Champion EWX9500lb winch, complete with waterproof solenoid pack, only £311.85 all in after a cheeky discount, I get it tomoz so will let you know what I think of the quality. I know its not a warn or superwinch but my budget wont allow much else, the guy from Winchsolutions seems very helpful and has assured me there is 100% service and warranty back up, plus its covered in the warranty for offroad use, not many do that.

As for the bumper, not sure what one yet, may even make my own.

My personal opinion is that when I have spoken to scorpion, they have been very helpful on the phone...But they sem to look at everything from a challenge point of view, in other words when I say what I use the disco for and what stuff would they recommend I use it seems they go a bit overkill or bang on about the top notch gear.

The whole point of this sport is to be able to afford it, and I think someone needs to get across to them that we dont all have a £10,000 budget. I got quoted £848.83 for a winch and bumper, I can get a more powerful winch and just as good bumper for £520, it is only to be used twice a month on the offroader so why do I need anything else.

Does anyone else agree...!
