Lots of people put a message something like "this is advertised elsewhere, I may end the auction early" on their auctions.

How exactly do you cancel/stop/end an auction early on ebay and is it within the ebay rules?

It's your bloomin auction and you have paid your listing fees so you can cancel any time you want
Just find the "end listing early" page in the  selling help page, type in you item no. and the job's a good 'un

Yeah - I know what you mean - but sometimes the item may be advertised in a local paper or similar and might sell this way before the ebay auction ends
Also, if it is a car you are selling and someone comes to view and offers you cash on the spot then you would be daft to refuse it
Anyway, as I have already said  - it's your listing and you have paid for it - do what you like

its proving its advertised elsewhere that could get you unstuck if you havent got it elsewhere, just using the txt as a get out..

if someone asks some awkward questions and catch you out, you could be reported to ebay for being naughty!

Are you sure you have to let auctions run to the end ? - I can't find anything that says it is against ebay rules to end your listing early ?

Hi,

According to Ebay rules, sellers can end an item early (the standard 'reason' is 'The item is no longer available for sale') except when there are 12 hours or less remaining and the item has a winning bid, including a reserve met bid.

They also note: "Sellers are not permitted to cancel bids and end listings early in order to avoid selling an item that did not meet the desired sale price. This is considered to be reserve fee circumvention. Although there are legitimate reasons for ending a listing early, abuse of this option will be investigated."

...though I can't see how they can distinuish between a valid cancellation and 'abuse of the option'  :?

I always put the advertised elsewhere clause as I usually put my stuff on here and will take it of ebay if someone wants it. Done it with an injector pump a couple of weeks ago. However I use it in genuine cases only as I start my bids at the very lowest I am willing to take for an item, cant see the point in starting at 99p for something that I want £100 for.

true, i always have a minimum bid for something that if it came down to it i wouldnt lose sleep if the min bid won.

also the post needs to be realistic, as some people think that something small wont cost much to send but they forget how much jiffy bags cost, how much post costs (which have gone up recently) and also you need to get there too.

ive never had a whinge bout the post, and if they ask i arrange alternate means (sold something to norway before now cos they wanted it but my restrictions on uk only meant they couldnt have it.. it didnt sell so i sold to this guy plus the correct post price) after all you dont want to put people off :)

one thing that does annoy me is the 99p buy now and a HUGE post cost!

Put item start at the least you will take, put a reserve on it, you can relist it if it dont sell, if you have a high bid but not up to reserve you can put it up with buy now { but the buy now is the highest bid price so I dont use it }I have relisted an item numerous times before its sold, if it sells off ebay I put sold on ebay advert.

remember the min amount of reserve is 50 quid

ie if your item isnt worth 50 quid you cant put a reserve on it

one thing i would like though is that you can specify when the auction ends

currently they are preset days away, but i would like a function where you can set the end date and time.

when you choose to end the auction early you get to pick from a list of options, including 'the item was lost or broken' just use that one... they're hardly going to come around and look for it are they?

as for people overcharging for postage, its wrong, and actually againt ebay rules... you can ask for a refund... if i get stung i wait for them to give me feedback then leave a narky comment on theirs....

i usually charge postage plus the cost of a jiffy bag/ box.... reasonable in my opinion.

ive been caught out before when i charged a few quid for something and it cost me bout a fiver more!

my fault so since then ive been gauging it depending on weight and size of bag then go from there

I just use ebay for advertising big things like cars and caravans. I refuse to pay the 3% of the ending price to ebay. If I sell a car say for 5k thats a big chunk going to ebay and a reserve of 4k is about £150. sod that.

Get it on for a 10 day listing for the min your willing to accept and then pull it off on day 9.

That's how we bought the 110... Payed by cheque when we went to see it, aftwards he apparently got 5 or 6 calls from people trying to offer him more money, but wouldn't take them.

Anything indicating that an auction will be ended early means I ignore the auction.

Personally I'd like to see people that do this kicked off of ebay.

must admit i do avoid those that say they can end the auction early..

it puts me off in terms of confidence in the seller, never mind the trust of being to win the item you want rather than the seller being greedy and wanting more

I get really fustrated by auctions being pulled with minutes to go .

The one that got me real mad was for a gearbox. There was little time to run and I was the only bidder so it was a giveaway price at the initial bid. It was pulled and then relisted the next day with a new photo but definately the same item   If they had a price in mind then they should have put a reserve on or a higher start price. :x

For that they would have got a big negative feedback from me but because there the auction did not close I had no opportunity to do so. I just ignore everything they sell now.

I'm with wanderer on this one, if you enter it for auction then the auction should run to conclusion. If a reserve isn't used or high enough start then tough! Pulling the item late auction when bids are on the table should be a big no no unless they have a really good excuse like fire/theft/death/invasion/SWMBO

This is a psychological thing. A low start price will get some people bidding early in the hope of a bargain. And I'm sure there are people who bid for the hell of it, even if they know they aren't going to get the item. Lots of bids encourages others to bid. The hope is that a bidding war starts and the end price is higher as a result.

I guess an item sat with a higher starting price and no bids has people thinking 'is there something wrong?' Whereas they are happier to bid when others have already done so.

There would be no point in reserves at any auction if you always started at what you wanted.

I have had a couple of items I have sold with the "advertised elsewhere", and both of them were pulled early because they were brought elsewhere - it is NOT always used for dubious means.

I am the same. I put stuff in the local paper and if a vehicle then a sign in the car and also put in on ebay. If I get genuine interest I mention its on ebay . If someone makes an offer at what I want I try to put them off till auction ends but if you have a genuine offer at the price you want you would mad to turn it down.
I put item is advertised elsewhere and can be removed at ANY time even with bids.
I have had several wasters on ebay so always leave my options open.
In real terms ebay is not the same as an auction house as ebay dont care about messers leaving bad feedback and if they ban someone they just re-register with a new name. My local auction house is very good and really looks out for sellers and buyers alike.

ive another gripe

people on ebay who arent telling the whole truth but arent lying either.

ive bought something worth 350 quid today, but not for me, and wasnt my money so im technically not losing out but its my ebay account and hence my feedback which will be affected..

anyway the person selling said they werent going to post until the money is cleared??? (paypal is more or less instant between accounts..!)

so i asked for clarification and they said they want their money in their BANK ACCOUNT first before posting!  cheeky feckers.

so i asked why.. (this is the good bit)

they are selling for someone else and that someone else wants their money before they post.

so by leaving this information out of the ad, they ensured a sale but now ive got to wait a bloody week!

really fecks me off it has  

my feedback wont be negative but it wont be complementary!
