On a standard vehicle, which would have better approach, break over and departure angles between a 110 and a disco?

Bit of a random one, I know... :shock:

Break over angle goes to the Disco oweing to the shorter wheelbase, less likey to bottom out. I reckon approach the 110 will have it as the Disco (when completley standard) has the big bumper on the front where as the 110 only has the little one. And depature I have no Idea.

BTW, These are all just my thoughts, and not proven in any way.

Cheers Dave - bit of an odd question I know. Just trying to figure out what would be a better base vehicle for general everyday and off roading - have a diso already, but still have a hankering for a defender!

get a defender!, they are the muts! ionly sold my everyday one, and use a disco for everyday because my back is shot, and couldnt handle the ride anymore, but given the choise defender everytime.

A 110 has about the same arse and about the same noze. It is longer between wheels so will ground out quicker although may be slightly higher in standard form.
The disco will offer more comfort and will be cheaper to buy leaving more for mods. For offroad 100" is generaly best alhough the challenge boys favour 90" for extreme stuff.
I have a RRC and a 90 and although the 90 is better offroad due to no overhangs the RRC offers the best package overall.

Actual figures:

Land Rover 90/110/130
    Maximum gradient for any Defender: 45°
    Approach angle for any Defender on 235 / 7.50 tyres: 50°
    Ramp breakover angle – on a Defender with 235 / 7.50 tyres - 90: 145.3° / 110: 152.8° / 130: 156°
    Departure angle - on a Defender with 235 / 7.50 tyres - 90: 47° / 110: 34°/ 130: 34°

Discovery Series 1 - 200 and 300Tdi

    Maximum gradient: 45°
    Approach angle 40°
    Departure angle 32°
    Ramp Breakover angle 151°


Ramp break over angle is only slightly better on the Disco vs 110 front....

This is because although the Defender has a an extra 10" in the wheelbase its runs on 235x85x16 (or 750x16) tyres which will give it extra clearance under the main chassis.

Also, the suspension on a 110 sits higher than a Disco so again will give an extra bit of clerance...

Both of these factors allow the Defender to compensate against it's extra wheelbase... so much so that I'd doubt you'd notice off road.

If you are talking about a series 2 Disco, the figures are slightly different but not much.

Thanks guys,

I was thinking they would probably be quite similar.

Still can't make my mind up - have got a disco already and done a few mods to it. If I did get a defender (more likely to be a 110 cos of prices) I would probably end up putting after market seats of some sort in to help with the comfort.

Decisions, decisions...

Get a 110, I did. I have RR for years. With the 110 the body is not as wide as a Disco.

Not a lot, I did a lane that was to narrow for a 110 the weekend. Dented to wheels and the roof :shock: . But once I had gone pased a 90 degree bend there was no going back.

Could have done it easly in a SJ or something small, the Discos that were with me did not do it :lol: .
