Defender into Discovery?
« on: September 27, 2006, 21:03:10 »
I've come across someone who has a gearbox and transfer box from a Defender TD, probably 1989.

Is that going to be a R380 gearbox, what are the gear ratio's likely to be and will it all fit into a Discovery 300TDi?

I doubt it very much unless it has been changed, the ratio on transfer box will be different.

I did suspect that it was the LT77 at that age! The lower ratios, however, would probably help with my oversized tyres (235/85x16)!

I stand to be corrected but the gearbox (LT77) should be a straight swop, its the transfer box you will have issues with as the 'lever' (or stick or whatever you want to call it) is in completly the wrong place.

:) I think you will find the bell housing is a lot longer on the r380.Whwen i had the td in mine the bell housing ended at the bulkhead and now with the r380 theres about 6 inches between the bulkhead and the end of the bell housing oh and the transfer box should fit on your r380 but be sure you want the ratio's that low :?

no its the other way about

a disco LT77 is a long bellhousing to push the engine forward.a defedner LT77 is a short bellhousing to keep the engine back & the sticks forward,
if you fit a disco box onto a def engine you end up with the sticks up through the seat box unless you swap casings about, also a def Tbox is 1.4 unless its a NA 110 T box which is 1.6,but 99% o the time its a 1.4 which is what you need to keep drivability if you have 235/85/16 tyres or bigger on your disco

does any o that make sense?  :?

the gearbox is different
disco ...short stick...long bellhousing
defender...long stick....short bellhousing

get under a 200 disco and have a looksy, and look at the gear lever set up

if you get i disco box the td will mate up tho that but you will also need disco engine mounts as they are different
may i ask why tho ??  :?
itll be just so underpowered...or u doing it for the hell of it?
im fitting a n/a into a disco fo the fun of it

The seller only has the gearbox/transfer box, not the vehicle. He reckons that it is a R380 gearbox and will fit into a Discovery 300TDi with the minimum of fuss!?

As it appears that this is not the case (at all), I'm no longer interested
