is the ZF auto box a direct replacement for the LT95 4 speed box by any chance?

no it isnt

if i remember tomorrow afternoon i will crawl outside and do some measuring for you....between our 3 we have an LT95, a 3spd torqueflite and a 4spd ZF !!!

propshafts are my main concern as ive just had thes ones custom made

Hang on the LT95 is a RRC box anyway, so you must have done some modyfying (unless it's a V8 stage 1 box)

But a Defender box sits nearer the engine than RRC/Disco.

its a RRC box and yes it was lots of modifiying

my plan was to get another, recon if need be, and then swap them over.
but the lt95 are getting quite rare. but ther are loads of ZF boxes about.
but iam not payer over £200 for some new prop shafts again.

Well if it's already a RRC box then you might be ok, you need to measure a standard set of RRC props now to be sure, or 2 comparable gearboxes.

i wouldnt have thought LR would make the RRC to have two different types of prop for different gearboxes, but you never know. and i didnt want to but another type of box to find out they didnt fit
